Leicester City Deducted Six Points for Breaking Financial Rules
Leicester were relegated from the Premier League last season. The club currently does not have a permanent coach. Leicester has been without a coach since Marti Cifuentes was sacked in January.
February 6, 2026: Leicester City have been deducted six points by the English Football League (EFL) for breaking financial rules. The decision is effective immediately. Because of this, Leicester dropped from 17th to 20th in the Championship points table. The club is still out of the relegation zone because of a better goal difference.
Bangladesh national team midfielder Hamza Chowdhury plays for Leicester. The decision follows a lawsuit filed by the Premier League in May. The lawsuit accused Leicester of breaking the three-year Profit and Sustainability Policy (PSR) until the 2023-24 season.
Leicester were relegated from the Premier League last season. The club currently does not have a permanent coach. Leicester has been without a coach since Marti Cifuentes was sacked in January.
In a statement, Leicester said they were “disappointed” by the decision and called it “inconsistent.” The statement added: “The unprecedented level of punishment that the Premier League sought has been significantly reduced in light of the Commission’s observations. However, the recommendation remains inconsistent and does not fully reflect the issues we have presented. These are important considerations given the potential impact on our objectives for the current season.”
Leicester also said, “We are now reviewing the full decision and considering our options. We want to engage constructively and ensure any action is fair, proportionate, and follows due process.”
Financial Rules and Losses
Under the PSR policy, a Premier League club cannot make a loss of more than £105m over three years. But this limit is reduced to £22m per season if the club is outside the top league. Leicester’s losses as of June 30, 2024, were £19.4m.
In the 2022-23 season, Leicester reported a loss of £89.7m. In the 12 months leading up to May 2022, the club had a loss of £92.5m, the highest in its history.
These figures do not include “add-backs,” like spending on infrastructure or investment in women’s football. The Premier League and EFL usually consider these necessary expenses for a club.
Even though the Premier League filed the complaint, the EFL took over the case after Leicester were relegated to the Championship.
Hamza received the bad news while he was injured on the pitch. He got injured in the match against Charlton Athletic on Saturday. After the match, Leicester’s interim coach Andy King said he did not think Hamza would be available soon. He also said Hamza would have a knee scan and could be out for six to eight weeks.
