June 05, 2026: Liverpool have officially appointed Spanish coach Andoni Iraola as their new head coach, replacing Arne Slot, who was dismissed after failing to retain the Premier League title. The club confirmed Iraola's appointment on Thursday, bringing an end to speculation surrounding the managerial position at Anfield.

Iraola emerged as Liverpool's preferred candidate soon after Slot's departure. While the club has not disclosed the length of his contract, British media reports suggest that the 43-year-old has signed a two-year deal. He arrives at Anfield after leaving Bournemouth at the end of the 2025-26 season.

Speaking to Liverpool's official website, Iraola expressed his excitement about taking charge of one of football's most prestigious clubs.

"I'm really excited. Everyone knows what kind of club Liverpool is. It's one of the biggest and most traditional clubs in the world. But after getting involved with the club, I felt from the inside that this is a truly unique club."

He added:

"You don't need much reason to be attracted to Liverpool. Liverpool is Liverpool. The atmosphere, the fans, the club's heritage, and the chance to coach top-level players and compete for titles—there's nothing more exciting than that. It's hard to get that kind of opportunity. I'm looking forward to getting started."

A New Era Begins at Anfield

Slot came under increasing pressure following Liverpool's disappointing second season in charge. After a promising start to his tenure, the Dutchman struggled to maintain the standards set by his predecessor, Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool supporters will now hope Iraola can restore the energetic, attacking style of football that made Klopp's side one of Europe's most feared teams. The Spaniard is known for his high-intensity pressing approach, a clear contrast to Slot's more controlled tactical style.

Iraola arrives with an impressive reputation after guiding Bournemouth to sixth place in the Premier League, securing the club's first-ever qualification for European competition through the Europa League. Since joining Bournemouth from Rayo Vallecano in 2023, he has transformed the Cherries into one of England's most exciting teams.

Under Iraola, Bournemouth improved steadily, finishing 12th, ninth and sixth in successive Premier League campaigns. He also earned praise for developing young talents such as Elie Junior Kroupi and Alex Scott.

Addressing Liverpool supporters directly, Iraola said:

"All I can say is, I want to be one of you. I want to earn your love and your trust so that we can all celebrate success together."

Born in Spain's Basque region, Iraola enjoyed a distinguished playing career, making more than 500 appearances for Athletic Bilbao. He later played in Major League Soccer with New York City FC, where he shared the dressing room with Frank Lampard and Andrea Pirlo.

Slot's Difficult Final Season

Iraola takes charge at a club undergoing a significant transition. Following Klopp's departure in 2024, Slot initially enjoyed success, leading Liverpool to their 20th league title during his first season, with Mohamed Salah scoring 29 goals.

However, Liverpool's fortunes declined sharply during the 2025-26 campaign. The team suffered a prolonged dip in form from late September and finished the season without winning a trophy.

The tragic death of forward Diogo Jota in a road accident in July last year deeply affected the squad. Despite spending around £450 million on new signings, Liverpool failed to regain momentum. Reports of a deteriorating relationship between Salah and Slot, combined with disappointing results, further increased frustration among supporters.

Liverpool eventually finished fifth in the Premier League, 25 points behind champions Arsenal. While the position secured qualification for next season's UEFA Champions League, it fell well short of the club's expectations.

The responsibility now falls on Iraola to revive Liverpool's fortunes, reconnect the team with its attacking identity, and guide the Reds back into contention for major honours.
