June 08, 2026: India produced a dominant all-round performance to defeat Afghanistan by an innings and 300 runs in the only Test of the ongoing multi-format series at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh. Led by centuries from KL Rahul and Shubman Gill, followed by a ruthless display from their spin attack, the hosts completely outclassed the visitors to register one of their biggest victories in Test cricket.

After winning the toss and opting to bat first, India recovered from the early loss of Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was dismissed for 24. KL Rahul anchored the innings with a brilliant century, scoring 100, while Sai Sudharsan continued his impressive form with 81. Captain Shubman Gill once again led from the front with a magnificent 126, while Rishabh Pant added a fluent 81. Washington Sundar remained unbeaten on 52, helping India post a massive 564/8 declared and put Afghanistan under immediate pressure.

Manav Suthar Announces Himself on Test Debut

Afghanistan struggled from the very beginning of their reply as India's bowlers maintained relentless pressure. Rahmat Shah fought a lone battle with a gritty 60, but the rest of the batting line-up failed to offer meaningful support. Debutant left-arm spinner Manav Suthar emerged as the star of the innings, producing a sensational spell of 6/33 from 22 overs, including 10 maidens. Prasidh Krishna chipped in with three wickets as Afghanistan were bundled out for just 152.

Suthar's performance earned him a place in the record books. His figures of 6/33 are now the second-best by an Indian bowler in a debut Test innings, behind only Narendra Hirwani's iconic 8/61 against West Indies in 1988. The young spinner also became the 10th Indian bowler and seventh Indian spinner to claim a five-wicket haul on Test debut.

India's Spin Trio Completes the Job

Trailing by 412 runs, Afghanistan were forced to follow on but found no respite against India's spin-heavy attack. Sediqullah Atal top-scored with 42, while Rahmanullah Gurbaz made 24, but the visitors once again failed to build partnerships. Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav took control of the innings, sharing seven wickets between them and dismantling the batting order with ease.

Washington finished with four wickets, while Kuldeep claimed three. Suthar added another wicket to cap off a dream debut, and Mohammed Siraj also struck once. Afghanistan were eventually bowled out for just 112 in 35.5 overs, handing India a comprehensive innings-and-300-run victory.

The emphatic win highlighted India's batting depth and spin-bowling strength. While centuries from Rahul and Gill laid the foundation, it was Manav Suthar's memorable debut and the combined brilliance of India's spin attack that defined the match. With the ODI leg of the series approaching, India will take plenty of confidence from this commanding performance in New Chandigarh.
