Marcus Stoinis Breaks Silence on Injury Setback Ahead of T20 World Cup 2026

Marcus Stoinis has eased injury concerns after hurting his thumb during the BBL clash against Adelaide Strikers

January 14, 2026: Marcus Stoinis expects to return in time for the Big Bash League finals. He believes the injury he suffered this week will not affect his chances of playing in the next T20 World Cup. The Melbourne Stars all-rounder injured his right thumb during their strong win over the Adelaide Strikers on Tuesday. He is confident the injury is only minor.

At 36, Stoinis has performed well with both bat and ball. His consistent form shows his value in domestic cricket and keeps him in contention for national selection. The injury happened late in the chase when Jamie Overton’s delivery hit his thumb. With only two runs needed to win, Stoinis retired hurt as a safety measure. The Stars finished the match easily, reaching the target with 29 balls to spare.

Seeing Stoinis leave the field caused concern among fans, especially as he is an important leader in the team ahead of the finals. Australian selectors are also watching player fitness closely. Several players are dealing with injuries before the global tournament. Pat Cummins and Tim David are among those working to prove they are fit.

Stoinis plays it safe after thumb injury

After the match, Stoinis spoke about the incident while icing his thumb. He said the decision to leave the field was made as a precaution, not because of serious pain.

“I think I’ll probably be getting a scan, but I reckon it’s alright. At first it feels like nothing, then after about 10 seconds you feel something. It just wasn’t worth the risk at that stage of the game,” Stoinis said after the match.

Lynn and Short convince Stoinis to step aside

Stoinis later admitted he did not want to leave the field and needed advice from others. Opposition players Chris Lynn and Matt Short encouraged him to go off and avoid taking any risk. With the Stars needing only two runs to win, they felt it was the safest option.

They talked some sense into me,” Stoinis said. “It was the right decision in the end.”
