Matheus Cunha's Double Ends Brazil's Goal Worries as Selecao Cruise Past Haiti
Matheus Cunha answered Brazil's critics with a brilliant brace as Carlo Ancelotti's side secured a convincing 3-0 victory over Haiti in the FIFA World Cup.
June 20, 2026: In surfing, there is a famous trick called "Hang Ten" — standing at the very tip of a surfboard with all ten toes hanging over the edge. It demands perfect balance, timing, and confidence.
Brazil seemed to be facing a similar balancing act after their 1-1 draw against Morocco in their FIFA World Cup opener. Questions were raised from every direction. Who would lead the attack without a reliable No. 9? Who would create chances from midfield? Critics even pointed to moments when Brazil appeared uncomfortable against Haiti, a side ranked 82 places below them in the FIFA rankings.
However, those concerns quickly disappeared at Philadelphia Stadium.
Before kickoff, Brazil were carrying the weight of enormous expectations. Yet if there was one player capable of helping them ride those waves, it was Matheus Cunha. The striker's movement and finishing were as smooth as a surfer gliding across the ocean. After scoring twice, Cunha celebrated with a "Hang Ten" gesture, sending a clear message — Brazil would not drown under World Cup pressure. Instead, they had found goals through the man wearing the No. 9 shirt.
While the final scoreline showed a comfortable 3-0 victory, it could easily have been much more. Brazil had two goals ruled out for offside — one from Raphinha in the 12th minute and another from substitute Endrick in the 78th. Carlo Ancelotti's side also squandered several clear opportunities.
All three goals came before halftime, leaving many wondering why Brazil's attacking intensity dropped after the break.
Brazil's Attack Finally Clicks
The victory also served as a warning to the rest of the tournament. When Ancelotti's attacking unit finds its rhythm, it can overwhelm any defense. That spark had been missing against Morocco. As he often does, Ancelotti shuffled his starting lineup and handed Cunha a place in the XI. The move appeared to solve Brazil's lingering issues in attack and midfield.
Bruno Guimarães and Lucas Paquetá provided control and creativity in midfield. Although Brazil took a few minutes to settle, the trio of Vinicius Jr., Raphinha, and Cunha gradually stretched Haiti's defense with their movement and pace.
Brazil suffered a setback in the 40th minute when Raphinha was forced off through injury. He was replaced by 19-year-old Ryan.
Cunha opened the scoring in the 14th minute before adding a second in the 36th. Vinicius played a crucial role in both goals. For the first, his effort was saved by Haiti goalkeeper Johnny Placide, but Cunha reacted quickest to convert the rebound. The second came after a perfectly weighted through ball from Vinicius.

Vinicius then capped off a brilliant first-half display by scoring himself in stoppage time. Receiving a pass from Paquetá, he calmly slipped the ball through the goalkeeper's legs to make it 3-0.
With a commanding lead at halftime, Ancelotti used the second half to experiment. Cunha was withdrawn in the 64th minute and replaced by Endrick. At one stage, Brazil had four forwards on the pitch — Endrick, Ryan, Vinicius, and Gabriel Martinelli.
Despite their attacking talent, Brazil struggled to maintain the same momentum after the interval.
Haiti, who had conceded 17 goals in their previous three meetings with Brazil, showed greater attacking intent and managed to create several dangerous moments. Goalkeeper Alisson was forced into an important save, while Haiti registered three shots on target during the second half. Brazil finished the match with six shots on target overall.
Ahead of the game, fans and former players had rallied behind the team. The 67,000-seat Philadelphia Stadium was dominated by Brazilian supporters. World Cup-winning legends Kaká and Ronaldo Nazário were once again present in the stands, while Ronaldinho made his first appearance of the tournament.
Before kickoff, Vinicius shared a moment with the legendary "Gaúcho." Perhaps inspired by the Brazilian icon, the Real Madrid star produced one of his most influential performances in recent memory, tearing apart Haiti's defense throughout the first half.
The victory moved Brazil to the top of Group C with four points from two matches. Morocco also have four points but trail on goal difference. Scotland sit third with three points, while Haiti remain bottom of the group after suffering their second consecutive defeat.
