May 15, 2026: Mumbai Indians kept their IPL 2026 campaign alive with a thrilling six-wicket victory over Punjab Kings in a high-scoring clash at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala on Thursday. A complete team performance, highlighted by Shardul Thakur’s four-wicket spell and Tilak Varma’s unbeaten 75, helped MI successfully chase down a daunting 201-run target with one ball remaining.
Punjab Kings once again made an aggressive start with Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh attacking from the very beginning. The opening pair added 50 runs inside the powerplay and put the Mumbai bowlers under pressure early in the innings. Priyansh looked in excellent touch before Deepak Chahar dismissed him for 27 with a well-disguised delivery.
Prabhsimran Singh continued his impressive form and anchored the innings brilliantly. He stitched together a valuable partnership with Cooper Connolly as PBKS crossed the 100-run mark comfortably and looked set for a massive total on a batting-friendly surface.
Shardul Thakur Sparks Collapse Before Omarzai’s Late Blitz
Just when Punjab Kings appeared to be heading towards a huge score, Shardul Thakur turned the game around with a sensational spell in the middle overs. The Mumbai all-rounder removed Prabhsimran Singh and skipper Shreyas Iyer in quick succession, breaking the momentum completely.
Raj Bawa also played an important role by contributing with a wicket and a brilliant catch in the field as Punjab suddenly slipped under pressure. PBKS lost wickets regularly during the middle phase and struggled to maintain the scoring rate.
However, Azmatullah Omarzai produced a crucial counterattack in the death overs with a fiery 38 off just 17 balls. Vishnu Vinod and Xavier Bartlett also chipped in with valuable cameos to help Punjab recover strongly and finish with a competitive total of 200/8 in their 20 overs.
For the Mumbai Indians, Shardul Thakur was the standout bowler with figures of 4/39, while Deepak Chahar provided key breakthroughs. Jasprit Bumrah bowled with discipline despite not picking up a wicket.

Tilak Varma Leads Mumbai’s Stunning Chase
Chasing 201, the Mumbai Indians got off to a flying start thanks to Ryan Rickelton’s explosive batting. The left-hander launched a brutal attack on the Punjab bowling unit and smashed 48 off just 23 deliveries. His aggressive intent helped MI race to 59 without loss despite Rohit Sharma struggling to find rhythm at the other end.
Punjab Kings managed to fight back into the contest through Marco Jansen, Azmatullah Omarzai and Yuzvendra Chahal. The trio picked up timely wickets and reduced the Mumbai Indians to 89/3, shifting the pressure back onto the visitors.
Tilak Varma then took complete control of the run chase with a mature yet aggressive innings. The stylish left-hander first steadied the innings alongside Sherfane Rutherford before accelerating brilliantly during the final overs. Tilak attacked both Yuzvendra Chahal and Marco Jansen fearlessly and dominated the death overs with clean hitting all around the ground.
Will Jacks also made an important contribution at the other end, providing stability and support during the crucial phase of the chase. Tilak Varma eventually remained unbeaten on a sensational 75 off just 33 balls as the Mumbai Indians completed the chase in 19.5 overs to keep their playoff hopes alive.

IPL 2026 Playoff Race Becomes More Intense
The defeat has put the Punjab Kings in a difficult position in the IPL 2026 playoff race. PBKS have now suffered five consecutive losses and remain fourth on the points table with 13 points from 12 matches. The team now faces a must-win situation in their remaining league games.
At the top of the standings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans are level on 16 points from 12 matches each. Sunrisers Hyderabad occupy third place with 14 points from 12 games, while Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals continue to closely follow Punjab with 12 points each from 11 matches.
Punjab Kings, who once looked among the strongest contenders for a top-two finish, are now under serious pressure. Even victories in their final two matches may not guarantee qualification if results from other teams do not go in their favour.
Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals are also mathematically alive in the race for the playoffs. KKR currently have 9 points from 11 matches, while DC have collected 10 points from 12 games. With multiple teams still fighting for qualification, the playoff battle is expected to go down to the final week of the league stage.
