Udaipur, Aug 26, 2025: Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu took a break after the Paris Olympics last year. Now she has made a strong return after one year. The Tokyo Olympics silver medalist won the gold medal at the Commonwealth World Championships in Ahmedabad on Monday. The lifter from Manipur also made a new Commonwealth record after moving from the 49 kg group to the 48 kg group.

Mirabai lifted a total of 193 kg in snatch and clean & jerk to win gold in the 48 kg group. She lifted 84 kg in snatch and 109 kg in clean & jerk. With this, she made a record. At the 2024 Paris Olympics, she had played in the 49 kg group but finished fourth and missed a medal.

The International Weightlifting Federation has removed the 49 kg group from the Los Angeles Olympics. Because of this, Mirabai went back to her old 48 kg group. She had earlier won gold in the 2017 World Championships in the 48 kg group. She also won double gold in the 2018 and 2022 Commonwealth Games. At the Tokyo Olympics, she won silver in the 49 kg group.

Chanu on Winning Gold

After winning the gold medal in Ahmedabad, she said, "I am very happy. This moment is very special for me because, for the first time after the Paris Olympics, I am getting a chance to compete on my own soil. The support of the fans has inspired me even more."

She also said, "This victory is possible because of my hard work, the guidance of my coach, and above all, the support of the people of our country. This win will inspire me for the World Championships in October. I will try my best to bring more pride to the country on the international stage."

In the same 48 kg group, Irene Henry of Malaysia won the silver medal by lifting 161 kg (73 kg + 88 kg). Nicole Roberts of Wales won the bronze medal by lifting 150 kg (70 kg + 80 kg). The Commonwealth Championships are also a qualifying event for next year’s Commonwealth Games. After this performance, Mirabai is sure to be a strong contender there again.
