March 20, 2026: Mitchell Starc is set to miss the start of IPL 2026 as Cricket Australia takes a cautious approach to manage his workload ahead of a busy international schedule.

“Starc is among Australia’s senior pacers being held back for the early part of the tournament, with his availability dependent on progress in return-to-play protocols over the coming weeks,” a report on cricket.com.au stated.

The 36-year-old has played all five Ashes Tests and featured in the latter stages of the Big Bash League. “While Starc stepped away from T20 Internationals last year, he remains central to Australia’s plans in the longer formats,” the report added.

Impact on Delhi Capitals

Starc was picked up by Delhi Capitals for INR 11.75 crore. “His absence will leave a significant gap in Delhi Capitals’ attack at the start of the season,” the report noted. Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood will also miss the opening games as part of the same workload management plan, while Nathan Ellis has been ruled out due to a hamstring injury.

“In Starc’s absence, Lungi Ngidi will lead DC’s fast bowling attack in the initial matches,” the report said. He will be supported by T. Natarajan, Auqib Nabi Dar, Kyle Jamieson, and Dushmantha Chameera.

New Signings and Squad Update

Chameera and Natarajan were part of DC last season, while Auqib, Ngidi, and Jamieson joined the team in the IPL 2026 auction. “Jammu & Kashmir-based fast bowler Auqib, who finished as the highest wicket-taker in the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy, was signed for Rs 8.40 crore from a base price of Rs 30 lakh,” the report stated. Ngidi and Jamieson were signed for Rs 2 crore each, adding depth to Delhi Capitals’ pace attack for the start of the season.

Delhi Capitals’ Start and Challenges Ahead

The Delhi Capitals started their 2025 season well, winning their first two games, but then their form dropped. Without Mitchell Starc at the start of the season, it will be harder for the Capitals to set the right pace early on. They finished fifth in 2025 and missed the playoffs.

This season, the team has a good mix of Indian and overseas players. KL Rahul may open the batting, while players like Prithvi Shaw, Ben Duckett, and Pathum Nissanka give them strong options at the top order.

The Capitals are still looking for their first IPL trophy. They will start their 2026 campaign against Lucknow Super Giants on April 1 and will hope for a winning start.
