Suryakumar Yadav captains MI as Hardik Pandya sits out ill, dealing a blow ahead of the DC clash in IPL 2026
April 04, 2026: Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya missed the match against Delhi Capitals on Saturday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium due to illness. In his absence, India’s T20 World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav took over as the stand-in captain. He confirmed the news at the toss after Delhi Capitals asked the Mumbai Indians to bat first.
Mumbai Indians had earlier released a statement saying that Hardik was unwell and would not take the field. In the build-up to the match, he was not seen in any practice sessions. He was also missing from training photos and videos, which hinted that he might not play. When Suryakumar came out for the toss, his absence was officially confirmed. This is a big blow for the Mumbai Indians, as Hardik plays a key role in both batting and bowling and adds balance to the team.

MI confident after strong win over KKR
In their previous match in IPL 2026, the Mumbai Indians registered a strong win against the Kolkata Knight Riders. Batting first, KKR scored 220 runs for 4 wickets, which was a good total against a strong side like Mumbai. However, the Mumbai Indians chased the target in a confident manner.
Rohit Sharma played a brilliant innings of 78 runs, while Ryan Rickelton scored 81. Both batters attacked from the start and put pressure on the KKR bowlers. Their strong partnership helped Mumbai get close to the target quickly. The team eventually won the match by 6 wickets with 5 balls remaining.
Hardik Pandya also made a useful contribution in that game. He scored an unbeaten 18 runs from 11 balls and stayed till the end to finish the match. With the ball, he picked up one wicket but was a bit expensive, giving away 39 runs in his 3 overs.
If Hardik is not available for the match against the Delhi Capitals, it will be a major concern for the Mumbai Indians. He is not only the captain but also an important all-rounder who connects both batting and bowling units.
However, the Mumbai Indians still have a strong record against the Delhi Capitals. In their last five matches, Mumbai has won four, while Delhi has managed only one win. In IPL 2025, the two teams met twice, and the Mumbai Indians won both matches.
Mumbai will now hope to continue their good form and perform well even without their regular captain.
