June 05, 2026: Round 9 of Norway Chess 2026 delivered a thrilling penultimate day in Oslo, leaving the race for the championship wide open heading into Friday’s final round.

Tournament leader Wesley So maintained his position at the top of the standings after drawing his classical game against World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen in a balanced contest. The American grandmaster then claimed victory in the Armageddon decider, earning the extra points needed to preserve his slim lead.

Meanwhile, Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu produced the standout performance of the day, defeating reigning World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju with the black pieces. In a complex and tactical encounter, Praggnanandhaa gradually seized the initiative after Gukesh came under pressure in the middlegame. The Indian star converted his advantage confidently to secure the full three points and move to 15 points overall—just half a point behind So.

Firouzja Stays in the Hunt

Alireza Firouzja also remains firmly in contention for the title. The French grandmaster survived a difficult classical game against Vincent Keymer, who enjoyed promising chances for much of the encounter.

After successfully defending the position and holding the draw in classical play, Firouzja emerged victorious in Armageddon to collect the additional points and keep his championship hopes alive heading into the final round.

Assaubayeva Clinches Norway Chess Women 2026 Title

In the women’s event, Bibisara Assaubayeva secured the Norway Chess Women 2026 title with a round to spare after another crucial result in Oslo.

Assaubayeva drew her classical game against Anna Muzychuk. The subsequent Armageddon game also ended in a draw on the board, allowing Muzychuk, who had the black pieces, to claim the Armageddon victory and earn the extra points under tournament rules. However, the result was enough for Assaubayeva to establish an unassailable lead at the top of the standings and mathematically secure the championship.

Zhu Jiner Climbs to Second Place

Zhu Jiner recorded the only decisive classical result in the women’s section, defeating Divya Deshmukh with the black pieces. Zhu maintained constant pressure throughout a tense middlegame and capitalised on Divya’s time trouble to convert her advantage. The victory earned her three valuable points and lifted her into second place in the standings.

Elsewhere, the clash between Humpy Koneru and reigning Women’s World Champion Ju Wenjun ended in a classical draw. Ju Wenjun subsequently won the Armageddon game with the black pieces to collect the additional points.
