June 2, 2025 - In the Norway Chess tournament, world champion India's D Gukesh achieved a huge victory by defeating the legendary world no. 1 Magnus Carlsen.

While Gukesh was ecstatic with the victory and Gukesh celebrated quietly, Carlsen lost his cool unable to handle losing to Gukesh in his own country. He banged his hand hard on the table where the chessboard was placed, therefore disarranging the pieces. He pushed back his chair angrily and walked off. He then came back to the board, apologised to Gukesh, and tried to fix the chess pieces. But in anger, he ended up throwing them down.

As Carlsen walked out of the hall quickly, he patted Gukesh on the back. The video of this moment has also gone viral.

Gukesh’s First Win Against Carlsen in Classical Chess

Gukesh has surprised everyone by defeating Carlsen for the first time in classical chess. The latter, playing with the white pieces, dominated most of the game and kept putting pressure on Gukesh. But Gukesh stayed calm and defended well. When the right moment came, he attacked.

As time pressure increased, Carlsen made mistakes. Gukesh used this chance and played with full focus to win the game.

Time Pressure

After the match, Gukesh said, "I could not do much. I just had to make the most of it. I was making moves that were difficult for Carlsen, and luckily they worked. One thing I have learned from this tournament is that time pressure can make even top players make mistakes."

The two had played earlier in the first round of the tournament, where Carlsen had won with his trademark moves. This time, Gukesh got his revenge.
