Pakistan’s Shoaib Malik, 37 years, retired from the One Day International format on the world stage, the announcement coming after Pakistan ended their World Cup campaign with a 94 run victory over Bangladesh.  Both Bangladesh as well as Pakistan have ended their campaign as they join South Africa, Afghanistan, West Indies and Sri Lanka on their way back home as the Semi Final slots were finalised after yesterdays match between Pakistan and Bangladesh.

India, Australia, England and New Zealand are the contenders for the ICC World Cup trophy, with the knock-outs taking place on 9 and 11 July.

Shoaib Malik, who was dropped from the final slot of Pakistan’s matches, after scoring 8 runs in the first three matches, also did not play the final match yesterday.  However, as Pakistan registered a win in their final match, Shoaib came to the ground and the players gave him a guard of honor through the ground.

He took Twitter to share a group photo and tweeted “Today I retire from one day International cricket. Huge thanks to all the players I have played with coaches I have trained under, family, friends, media and sponsors. And my fans, I love you all”.

Shoaib, who played 287 one day internationals for Pakistan, scored 7,543 runs and claimed 158 wickets in his campaign. Mallik had been appointed Pakistan ODI and test captain after their 2007 world cup campaign. In a press conference after the game, Malik said he would continue playing T20 internationals for Pakistan.
