April 21, 2026: South American football once again witnessed serious crowd trouble, as violence disrupted the Paraguayan Primera División “Superclásico” between Olimpia and Cerro Porteño. The high-voltage match, played at the Defensores del Chaco Stadium in Asunción, was suspended after just 29 minutes due to escalating clashes between supporters. According to reports, at least 50 people were injured in the incident, while police have arrested around 60 individuals so far.

Match suspended after violence broke out in the stands

The match between the two top teams in the league was expected to be intense, as the rivalry between Olimpia and Cerro Porteño is one of the most heated in Paraguayan football. While the game began on schedule, tensions outside the pitch quickly escalated. Police reports claim that some Cerro Porteño supporters entered the stadium without tickets and began throwing fireworks towards the opposing section. In a further disturbing development, objects, including bottles filled with urine, were reportedly thrown into the Olimpia stands, leading to chaos and confrontation between fans.

As the situation worsened, police attempted to control the crowd using tear gas and rubber bullets. However, the violence intensified instead of calming down. Around the 29th minute, groups of Cerro Porteño fans reportedly left their section and clashed with security personnel. Several police officers were injured in the violence, including one who suffered a broken nose and another who was repeatedly struck in the face. Both officers are expected to undergo surgery. In total, six police officers were reported injured, while large parts of the stadium were filled with smoke during the unrest.

Authorities confirmed that around 50 people sustained injuries in the incident, and 60 individuals have been detained so far as investigations continue. Officials are now working to identify the main instigators of the violence in order to take strict action and possibly impose future stadium bans. The match, which had nearly 40,000 spectators in attendance, had seen no goals before it was suspended.

Since it was Olimpia’s home fixture, both clubs have exchanged statements over responsibility. Cerro Porteño has argued that Olimpia, as the host, was responsible for security arrangements and should face consequences if the match is canceled. Meanwhile, Olimpia has claimed that Cerro Porteño supporters initiated the violence and therefore should be held accountable and potentially denied points. The final decision on the match outcome is now expected from the league authorities after reviewing the incident.
