April 04, 2026: Punjab Kings secured a comfortable five-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, chasing 210 runs in 18.4 overs. Despite a stronger batting performance from CSK compared to their previous game, they could not defend the total as PBKS executed a near-perfect chase, guided by their strong partnerships and depth in the batting line-up.

Batting first, CSK struggled early as captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sanju Samson failed to keep the scoreboard moving. It was 18-year-old Ayush Mhatre who shifted the momentum with a brilliant 73 off 43 balls, striking six fours and five sixes. After Mhatre’s dismissal, Shivam Dube contributed 45 runs and Sarfaraz Khan added 32, helping CSK post a total of 209/5. Despite some support from the lower order, CSK lost crucial overs due to slow scoring in the powerplay and middle overs. For PBKS, Vijaykumar Vyshak picked up two key wickets, while Yuzvendra Chahal bowled economically, although dropped catches denied him further success.

PBKS Chase Led by Explosive Starts and Key Partnerships

Chasing 210, Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh launched a commanding start. Arya scored a blazing 39 off just 11 balls, hitting three fours and four sixes, while Prabhsimran added 43 runs, providing stability and momentum. Cooper Connolly also played an important role with 36 off 22 balls.

After the departure of the top-order batsmen, Shreyas Iyer anchored the innings with a composed 50 off 29 balls, including four fours and three sixes. Although Iyer was dismissed in the 17th over, the lower order, led by Shashank Singh and Marcus Stoinis, ensured Punjab crossed the finish line comfortably.

In the post-match presentation, Iyer praised the opening partnership of Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh for setting the tone of the chase and highlighted the team’s ability to handle pressure. He also noted that giving all batsmen time at the crease had boosted confidence, while stressing the importance of improving over-rate. Iyer explained his decision to limit Ravindra Jadeja Chahal’s overs in favor of seamers, citing the opposition’s batting lineup as the reason.

For CSK, the loss continues a troubling trend at Chepauk, marking their sixth consecutive defeat at the venue. While Mhatre, Dube, and Sarfaraz displayed intent with strong individual performances, the lack of consistent support from other batters and inability to contain the opposition meant they could not defend the total. With both batting and bowling underperforming at critical moments, CSK will need a collective improvement to recover in the tournament, while PBKS showcased a well-structured batting unit capable of chasing big totals efficiently.
