April 28, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the Board of Control for Cricket in India (Board of Control for Cricket in India) Indoor Cricket Academies across the North-East from the newly constructed Indoor Cricket Academy at the Sikkim Cricket Ground in Rangpo, Sikkim. The initiative aims to improve cricket infrastructure and provide better training opportunities for young players in the region.

Focus on development and modern facilities

The BCCI announced that six indoor cricket academies across the North-East were inaugurated by PM Modi, with the aim of improving access to high-quality training and opportunities. The event was attended by ICC Chairman Jay Shah along with senior BCCI officials, including President Mithun Manhas, Secretary Devajit Saikia, Vice President Rajeev Shukla, Joint Secretary Prabhtej Bhatia, Treasurer A. Raghuram Bhat, and IPL Chairman Arun Singh Dhumal. Officials from the remaining North-Eastern states also joined the ceremony via video conference.

BCCI statement and vision

The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) has established six indoor cricket academies across the North-Eastern region of India. These centres are located in Rangpo (Sikkim), Doimukh (Arunachal Pradesh), Imphal (Manipur), Madankurklang (Meghalaya), Aizawl (Mizoram), and Dimapur (Nagaland). Together, they form a connected training network aimed at making quality cricket infrastructure more accessible across the region and strengthening the overall development of the game.

A major highlight of this initiative is the newly developed cricket facility at the Sikkim Cricket Ground in Mining, Rangpo. Built at a cost of ₹23 crore by the BCCI, the modern centre has been constructed within the Sikkim Cricket Association (SICA) premises. It features advanced training infrastructure, including net practice areas, a fully equipped gymnasium, a swimming pool, and other essential support facilities designed to enhance player development.

The academies have been designed as high-performance training centres with indoor practice pitches, modern gymnasiums, temperature-controlled swimming pools, and dedicated administrative and training blocks. These facilities will enable cricketers to train throughout the year, even during the region’s long monsoon season. They will also significantly reduce the need for young players to travel outside the North-East for professional-level coaching and development opportunities.

These developments are expected to improve training standards and support young cricketers in the North-East. By providing better facilities and opportunities, the initiative aims to strengthen cricket at the grassroots level and help nurture future talent from the region.

BCCI President Mithun Manhas said: “This initiative reflects a clear intent to take cricket infrastructure to every region and build a stronger, more inclusive foundation for the game.”
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia added: “I am confident that this will pave the way for more players from the North-East to progress to the highest levels of the game.”
