April 29, 2026: Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) produced a sensational attacking display to defeat Bayern Munich 5-4 in a breathtaking UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg. The result gives the French champions a narrow advantage heading into the decisive return leg in Munich.

Bayern Munich struck first through Harry Kane, who confidently converted a penalty in the 17th minute. PSG responded quickly, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia restoring parity in the 24th minute after a brilliant solo effort. The momentum swung again in the 33rd minute when João Neves headed PSG ahead from an Ousmane Dembélé corner. However, Bayern equalised just before half-time through a powerful strike from Michael Olise in the 41st minute.

PSG regained control in first-half stoppage time after VAR awarded a penalty for a foul by Alphonso Davies, which Dembélé calmly converted to make it 3-2 at the break.

Second-Half Goal Frenzy and PSG Hold on Under Late Bayern Pressure

The second half began with PSG extending their lead almost immediately. Kvaratskhelia scored his second goal in the 56th minute following a well-orchestrated move involving Achraf Hakimi. Moments later, Dembélé struck again on a counter-attack to make it 5-2, seemingly putting the tie beyond Bayern’s reach.

However, Bayern Munich mounted a strong late comeback. Dayot Upamecano pulled one back in the 65th minute from a Joshua Kimmich free-kick, before Luis Díaz reduced the deficit further in the 68th minute. VAR confirmed Díaz’s goal after an initial offside call.

Despite sustained pressure in the closing stages, PSG managed to hold on and secure a dramatic 5-4 victory, taking a crucial lead into the second leg. The return fixture will be played at the Allianz Arena on May 6, with the winner on aggregate set to face either Atlético Madrid or Arsenal in the final.

According to ESPN, the match became the highest-scoring UEFA Champions League semi-final in history, with nine goals scored in total. It also recorded five goals before half-time, setting a new benchmark for semi-final and final matches in the competition.

The encounter now stands as the second-highest scoring knockout match in Champions League history, behind Bayern Munich’s 8-2 win over Barcelona in 2020. It also marked only the second time both teams scored four or more goals in a Champions League knockout fixture, and the first time both sides have crossed 40 goals in a single UCL campaign.

Notably, PSG’s victory also made history as only the third occasion in which a team has lost a Champions League match despite scoring four or more goals, highlighting the extraordinary attacking nature of the contest.
