R Ashwin IPL Retirement: After International Cricket, Ashwin Says ‘Goodbye’ to IPL

Udaipur, Aug 27, 2025: Former Indian cricketer R Ashwin has announced his retirement from the IPL. Ashwin, who has played for five different teams in the league, shared the news on Twitter. Last year, Ashwin had also said goodbye to international cricket. Now, after retiring from the IPL, he has said that he may be seen playing in different franchise leagues around the world.

Ashwin shared a post on X and wrote, “Special day and hence a special beginning. They say every ending will have a new start. My time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today,” he said.

He also added, “I would like to thank all the franchises for the wonderful memories and relationships over the years. Most importantly, I thank the @IPL and the @BCCI for what they have given me until now. I look forward to enjoying and making the most of what lies ahead.”

Ravichandran Ashwin, a veteran Indian off-spinner, retired from international cricket last year. He was an important player for CSK when they won the IPL titles in 2010 and 2011.

Ashwin played a total of 221 IPL matches in his career and took 187 wickets. In IPL 2025, he was bought by CSK for ₹9.75 crore and took 7 wickets in 9 matches. His best IPL season was 2014, where he claimed 16 wickets in 16 matches.

As per the BCCI policy, no Indian cricketer can play in foreign leagues without retiring from both international cricket and the IPL. Ashwin’s decision to leave IPL is linked to his plan of playing in different leagues across the world.

Across his IPL career, Ashwin picked 187 wickets at an average of 30.22, an economy of 7.20, and a strike rate of 25.2, with best bowling figures of 4/34. He also contributed with the bat, scoring 833 runs in 92 innings at an average of 13.01 and a strike rate of 118.15, with a highest score of 50.
