Ajinkya Rahane Steps Down as Captain, Shocks Fans with Emotional Post

Udaipur, Aug 22, 2025: Ajinkya Rahane has announced that he will no longer captain the Mumbai cricket team. He shared this news in a long post on Instagram. Rahane said that the time has come to prepare a new generation of leaders in the team and give them responsibility.

The 37 years old batter who led Mumbai to the title in the last season of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, has now decided to leave the captaincy of the team. He shared this news on social media and wrote:

"It has been a great honor for me to captain the Mumbai team and win championships with it. Before the new domestic season, I feel that now is the right time to prepare a new youngster, so I have decided not to continue in the role of captain."

Rahane also added: "I am fully prepared to give my best as a player and I will continue my journey with Mumbai to help the team win more trophies."

Under Rahane’s leadership, Mumbai achieved many successes in domestic cricket. The team won the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where Rahane was also the highest run scorer. He also led Mumbai to the semi-finals of the Ranji Trophy, but they lost to Vidarbha by 90 runs.

Mumbai won the Ranji Trophy 2023-24 after 7 years under his captaincy. In the final at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai defeated Vidarbha by 169 runs and won the trophy for a record 42nd time.

Rahane has played an important role in Mumbai cricket. He is the second-highest run scorer for Mumbai in first-class cricket, after former India opener Wasim Jaffer. Rahane has scored 5,932 runs in 76 matches, including 19 centuries, with an average of 52. He was last seen in IPL 2025, where he scored 390 runs in 13 matches. Under his captaincy, the KKR team finished sixth in that season.
