Former India head coach Rahul Dravid is reportedly among the leading candidates to become England's next Test coach after Brendon McCullum's exit.

July 13, 2026: Could Rahul Dravid soon find himself in the England dressing room, planning strategies against the Indian team? While nothing has been confirmed officially, the possibility is now being widely discussed in English cricket circles.

The much-talked-about 'Bazball' era in England's Test cricket has reportedly come to an end following the departure of Brendon McCullum as the team's head coach. With the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) beginning its search for a new Test coach, former India head coach Rahul Dravid has emerged as one of the leading names under consideration.

According to reports in the British media, Dravid is among the candidates being seriously evaluated as McCullum's successor. Although there has been no official approach or confirmation from either the ECB or Dravid, his name has generated significant interest due to his impressive coaching record with the Indian team.

Dravid's Coaching Record Makes Him a Strong Contender

Rahul Dravid enjoyed a successful tenure as India's head coach and is regarded as one of the most respected figures in world cricket. Under his guidance, India lifted the ICC T20 World Cup title in 2024, with senior stars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli playing key roles in the triumph.

His achievements in Test cricket have also been noteworthy. India reached the final of the ICC World Test Championship in 2023 during his tenure, while the team consistently remained among the strongest sides in the format. His calm leadership, tactical understanding, and emphasis on player development have earned him widespread admiration across the cricketing world.

Despite the growing speculation, it remains unclear whether Dravid is interested in taking up the role of England's Test coach. Reports suggest that he is not actively looking for a full-time coaching assignment at present.

However, the nature of England's Test coaching role could work in his favour. Unlike a year-round assignment across all formats, the position would primarily focus on Test cricket, allowing Dravid to spend more time with his family while continuing to work in the format he is most passionate about.

The report further states that if the ECB decides to make an offer, Dravid could seriously consider the opportunity because of the balance it would provide between professional commitments and personal life.

Andy Flower, Sangakkara Among Other Leading Candidates

Rahul Dravid is not the only high-profile name on England's shortlist. Former England coach Andy Flower is also considered one of the frontrunners for the position.

Flower remains one of the most successful coaches in England's Test history. During his tenure, England won three Ashes series and climbed to the No. 1 position in the ICC Test rankings. More recently, the former Zimbabwe captain has enjoyed considerable success in franchise cricket, guiding Royal Challengers Bengaluru to two IPL titles as head coach. Given his experience and previous success with England, a return to the role would not come as a surprise.

Several other prominent names are also believed to be under consideration. The list reportedly includes Sri Lankan batting legend Kumar Sangakkara, former England spinner Richard Dawson, ex-England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff, Pakistan head coach Mike Hesson, and former Australian opener Justin Langer.

As England prepares for a new chapter in Test cricket after the McCullum era, the appointment of the next head coach is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the team's future. Whether Rahul Dravid eventually takes charge remains uncertain, but his inclusion among the leading contenders has certainly added an intriguing dimension to England's coaching search.
