Real Madrid Stunned at Bernabéu as Getafe Blow Opens Door for Barcelona in La Liga Title Race
Barcelona currently lead La Liga with 64 points from 26 matches, while Real sits second with 60 points from the same number of games.
March 03, 2026: Real Madrid CF suffered a major setback in the La Liga title race after a 1-0 defeat to Getafe CF at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium on Sunday night. A day earlier, FC Barcelona had secured an emphatic 4-1 victory over Villarreal CF, moving four points clear at the top of the table.
Real Madrid had the opportunity to cut the gap to just one point with a win against Getafe. However, they failed to capitalise and now find themselves under serious pressure in the title race. Barcelona currently lead La Liga with 64 points from 26 matches, while Real sits second with 60 points from the same number of games. This marks Real’s second consecutive league defeat, having previously lost 2-1 to CA Osasuna. It is the first time since 2020 that Real have suffered back-to-back league losses. Meanwhile, this was Getafe’s first win at the Bernabéu since 2008.
Mbappé’s Absence Adds to Real Madrid’s Woes
Real Madrid’s struggles have been compounded by the absence of Kylian Mbappé, who is currently in France undergoing treatment for a knee injury. Los Blancos have lost both matches played without him, and his absence has clearly affected their attacking rhythm at a crucial stage of the campaign.
Getafe’s Uruguayan forward Martín Satriano proved to be the difference-maker on the night. He capitalised on defensive lapses to score a brilliant goal in the 39th minute, which ultimately sealed the victory for the visitors.

To make matters worse, Real were reduced to ten men in added time when midfielder Franco Mastantuono was shown a red card following an altercation. Throughout the match, Real lacked cohesion and a clear attacking plan, while Getafe displayed greater discipline and intensity.
Speaking after the defeat, Real Madrid coach Álvaro Arbeloa admitted, “Of course, we could have played better. But my players tried. We had more clear chances than them.”
Real will now face Celta Vigo in the league next Friday before taking on Manchester City FC, managed by Pep Guardiola, in the Champions League Round of 16. Mbappé’s availability for these crucial fixtures remains uncertain. However, Arbeloa remains defiant, stating, “Nobody is giving up here. This is Real Madrid — the fight will continue until the last match. A four-point gap can be overturned, and we will fight for it.”
