BCCI Fines LSG Captain Rishabh Pant Over Shocking Reason for Thumping Win Over CSK
Rishabh Pant was fined for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during Lucknow Super Giants’ IPL 2026 clash against Chennai Super Kings at the Ekana Cricket Stadium, joining the growing list of captains penalised for slow over-rate offences this season.
May 16, 2026: BCCI has fined Rishabh Pant Rs 12 lakh after Lucknow Super Giants maintained a slow over-rate during their IPL 2026 clash against Chennai Super Kings on Friday, May 15.
The IPL governing body confirmed the penalty in an official statement and stated that it was LSG’s first over-rate offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which deals with minimum over-rate violations.
“As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Rishabh Pant was fined INR 12 lakhs,” the statement read.
Pant has now joined a growing list of captains penalised for slow over-rates in IPL 2026. Earlier this season, captains including Pat Cummins, Axar Patel, Hardik Pandya, and Shubman Gill were also fined for similar offences.
Pant Reflects on LSG’s Dominant Win Over CSK
Despite the fine, Lucknow Super Giants enjoyed a memorable outing at the Ekana Cricket Stadium as they comfortably chased down a target of 188 in just 16.4 overs with seven wickets in hand.
Mitchell Marsh starred with the bat for LSG, smashing a blistering 90 off just 38 deliveries to lead the side to victory. Pant praised his team’s approach and said the players were still motivated to perform strongly despite being out of the playoff race.
“It feels good. Getting a win definitely feels good. There are things we talk about, that there is a lot to play for, regardless of where our season ends. We take a lot of pride in playing this way,” Pant said during the post-match presentation.
The LSG skipper also lauded young pacer Akash Singh for his disciplined bowling performance against Chennai.
“Definitely, he’s been working hard throughout the IPL. Sometimes it becomes difficult to give everyone opportunities, but he is one player who sticks to the plans consistently. The way he bowled and stayed disciplined for a long period was really good to see,” Pant added.

Pant Explains Why He Did Not Come Out to Bat
One of the biggest talking points during the chase was Pant’s decision not to bat despite LSG losing a few wickets late in the innings. Instead, players like Abdul Samad and Mukul Choudhary were promoted ahead of him.
Pant revealed after the match that the team management wanted to provide opportunities to players who had not featured much during the tournament.
“I was ready to bat, but the idea came up in the dressing room that we should try players who haven’t got enough opportunities this season. I kept thinking whether I should go in or not because I still wanted to be out there, but sometimes you have to respect the team’s plans and decisions,” Pant explained. The victory helped Lucknow Super Giants end their losing run, while Chennai Super Kings suffered a major setback in their IPL 2026 playoff hopes.
