In a remarkable achievement, 43-year-old Indian tennis ace Rohan Bopanna has soared to the pinnacle of the ATP Rankings, claiming the coveted World No. 1 spot in men's Tennis. The latest rankings, released mark a historic milestone as Bopanna becomes the oldest player to achieve this feat in men's tennis.

Bopanna's stellar climb follows his recent victory at the Australian Open 2024 in men's doubles, propelling him two places up in the ATP Rankings. Partnered with Matthew Ebden from Australia, Bopanna secured his career's first men's doubles Grand Slam title. Notably, Ebden is now the new World No. 2.

Joining the elite club of Indian tennis legends, including Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi, and Sania Mirza, Bopanna cements his status as the fourth Indian to reach the pinnacle of tennis rankings. All four players share the distinction of being the only Indian Grand Slam winners.

Bopanna's ascent to the top spot comes at a pivotal time for Indian tennis, aligning perfectly with the Paris 2024 Olympics. As the qualification criteria for men's doubles at the Olympics include the top 10 players in the ATP doubles rankings, Bopanna's achievement holds immense significance for India.

Starting the 2023 season ranked 19th, Bopanna faced setbacks in 2022 due to a knee injury, leading to multiple event withdrawals, including the Davis Cup. However, his resilient comeback post-recovery showcases his determination and top form on the court.

Teaming up with Ebden, Bopanna clinched the Indian Wells Masters title last year, etching his name in history as the oldest ATP Masters 1000 champion. The Indo-Australian duo's impressive run includes reaching the men's doubles semi-finals at Wimbledon and the final at the US Open.

Adding to his accolades, Bopanna reached the mixed doubles final at the 2023 Australian Open alongside Sania Mirza, further demonstrating his versatility and prowess on the court.

In light of these accomplishments, Bopanna ascended to a then career-best No. 3 in the men's doubles rankings in November last year. His journey stands as a testament to resilience, skill, and a passion for the sport that continues to inspire tennis enthusiasts globally.
