"I Did Not Want to Play This Sport Anymore" – Rohit Sharma Reveals Thoughts After World Cup Loss
Rohit said that he thought about retiring from cricket after missing the ODI World Cup 2023 title
Udaipur, Dec 22, 2025: Veteran India batter Rohit Sharma is seen as one of the greatest batters of his generation. Besides being very strong with the bat, Rohit is also praised for his captaincy. He led India to the Champions Trophy title in 2025 and the T20 World Cup in 2024.
However, one of the biggest titles in world cricket, the ODI World Cup, has so far avoided Team India and Rohit Sharma. Rohit led India to the final of the ODI World Cup 2023 but could not win, losing to Australia in Ahmedabad.
Rohit later said that he thought about retiring from cricket after missing the ODI World Cup 2023 title.
Rohit Opens Up on World Cup Disappointment
“Everyone was very disappointed, and we could not believe what happened. For me personally, it was a very tough time because I had given everything to the World Cup since I became captain. I was completely distraught, and I had no energy left in my body. It took me a couple of months to get back to being myself. It was a tough pill to swallow. I had to put all my focus on something coming up—the 2024 T20 World Cup,” Rohit Sharma said at an event.
“At one point, I felt like I did not want to play this sport anymore because it had taken everything out of me. It took some time, but I kept reminding myself that this is something I truly love. It was right in front of me, and I could not let it go so easily. It took a lot of energy and careful thought to get back on the field and start moving again,” he added.
Rohit Sharma Set to Play Again in January 2026
Speaking about the 38-year-old veteran, Rohit Sharma will once again be in action for India when the team takes on New Zealand. The two sides will compete in three ODIs and five T20Is. Rohit will be available to play in all three ODI matches scheduled in January 2026. His return will be closely watched by fans, as he continues to lead and inspire the team with his experience, batting skills, and leadership. After the challenges he faced following the 2023 ODI World Cup, this series will be an important opportunity for Rohit to demonstrate his form and help India aim for victories in both formats.
