June 02, 2026: The T20 Mumbai League 2026 began in style at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday, with Eagle Thane Strikers producing a dominant performance to defeat Bandra Blasters by nine wickets in the opening match of the tournament. The day also featured the presence of league ambassador Rohit Sharma, who attended the toss of the second match between MSC Maratha Royals and Aakash Tigers Mumbai Western Suburbs. Rohit was joined by Mumbai Cricket Association President Ajinkya Naik, League Governing Council Chairman Rajdip Gupta, and other MCA officials.

After winning the toss and electing to field, Eagle Thane Strikers made early inroads into the Bandra Blasters' batting line-up. Captain Shardul Thakur struck in the opening stages, dismissing Prateekkumar Ravishankar for a duck. Bandra Blasters recovered through a 45-run partnership between captain Suved Parkar (30) and Parag Khanapurkar (16), but a mix-up between the two batters led to Parag's run-out. Atharva Ankolekar then put further pressure on the batting side by picking up two wickets in successive deliveries. Despite the setbacks, Jay Jain scored 45, and Om Keshkamat added 40, while Dhrumil Matkar remained unbeaten on 28 off 17 balls to help Bandra Blasters post a competitive total of 189/9 in 20 overs.

Shashwat Jagtap and Sumeir Zaveri Power Eagle Thane Strikers to Victory

Chasing 190, Eagle Thane Strikers got off to a flying start through Shashwat Jagtap and Impact Player Sumeir Zaveri. The opening pair completely dominated the Bandra Blasters bowlers and raced to 93 runs inside the Powerplay. Both batters reached their half-centuries in quick time and continued to attack throughout the innings.

The duo added a massive 155-run partnership for the first wicket, effectively taking the game away from the opposition. Zaveri played a stunning knock of 80 from just 36 balls, smashing 11 fours and four sixes before being dismissed. Jagtap, however, remained unbeaten and produced one of the finest innings of the tournament's opening day. He brought up his century in only 50 balls and guided his side home comfortably with plenty of overs to spare. Eagle Thane Strikers eventually reached 194/1 in just 15.2 overs to register a commanding nine-wicket win.

MSC Maratha Royals Edge Aakash Tigers in Super Over Thriller

The second match of the day delivered high drama as MSC Maratha Royals defeated Aakash Tigers Mumbai Western Suburbs in the tournament's first Super Over finish. After being put into bat, Aakash Tigers posted 165/8 in their 20 overs. Their bowlers then produced a disciplined effort to keep the Royals under pressure throughout the chase.

MSC Maratha Royals needed 10 runs from the final over and managed to level the scores at 165. However, they failed to score the winning run before the innings ended, forcing the contest into a Super Over. The dramatic finish kept fans on the edge of their seats and set up the first major thriller of the season.

Batting first in the Super Over, MSC Maratha Royals scored 16/1. Tushar Deshpande played a crucial role by hitting an important boundary before being run out on the final ball. Chasing a target of 17, Aakash Tigers struggled against disciplined bowling from the Royals. Ajit Yadav was run out during the chase, adding further pressure on the batting side.

Needing 12 runs from the final ball, Sourabh Singh struck a six, but it was not enough to take his side over the line. Aakash Tigers finished on 11/1 in the Super Over, handing MSC Maratha Royals a memorable five-run victory and a winning start to their campaign.

The excitement will continue on Tuesday with the launch of the inaugural T20 Mumbai Women's League. SOBO Mumbai Falcons will take on Thane Sky Risers in the first-ever women's match of the competition, marking another important milestone in the growth of Mumbai cricket.
