July 11, 2026: Senegal legend Sadio Mane has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a remarkable 14-year career with the national team. The 34-year-old forward made the emotional decision after Senegal's 3-2 defeat to Belgium in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, a result that ended the Lions of Teranga's hopes of progressing further in the tournament.

Mane confirmed his retirement through an emotional statement, thanking fans for their unwavering support throughout his international journey.

"I have given everything for my country. I have always given my best and fought with all my heart for my homeland," Mane said.

The former Senegal captain also expressed his gratitude to the supporters who stood by him over the years. He apologised for any disappointment he may have caused during his career and asked fans for their forgiveness.

"If I have ever disappointed you at any point in my career, I hope you will forgive me. Thank you for standing by me throughout this journey," he added.

His announcement officially brings the curtain down on an outstanding international career that began in 2012.

A Memorable International Career

Mane leaves the Senegal national team as one of the country's greatest footballers. During his international career, he made 130 appearances, scoring 54 goals and providing 29 assists.

One of the biggest highlights of his career came in 2021, when he played a crucial role in helping Senegal win their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title. His leadership, experience and match-winning performances made him one of the most influential players in the history of Senegalese football.

At club level, Mane enjoyed tremendous success with Liverpool, where he won several major trophies, including the UEFA Champions League and the Premier League. Before making his mark in England, he started his professional career with French club FC Metz, which laid the foundation for his rise in world football.

Plans to Continue Serving Senegalese Football

Although his international playing career has come to an end, Mane made it clear that he is not stepping away from football completely.

He revealed that he wants to continue contributing to Senegalese football by taking on a different role in the future.

"I want to use my experience to serve my country, and I will do that with great joy," he said.

When asked about his future plans, Mane said he is open to several possibilities, including joining the national team's technical staff, becoming a coach or working in football administration.

"I could be part of the technical staff. I could also help the team as a coach from the sidelines. Another possibility is serving Senegalese football through administration," he explained.

While fans will no longer see Sadio Mane wearing the Senegal jersey on the pitch, the legendary forward has made it clear that his commitment to the country's football remains as strong as ever. His experience, leadership and passion are expected to continue benefiting Senegalese football in the years ahead.
