The series, scheduled to begin on August 15, has already seen the Indian team lose several key players due to injuries. Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out after sustaining a knee injury during the ODI series against England last month, while all-rounder Washington Sundar is also expected to miss at least the opening Test because of a hamstring injury. Fast bowlers Harshit Rana and Akash Deep, along with all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, are also continuing their rehabilitation after suffering injuries in recent weeks.
The latest concern revolves around Sai Sudharsan, who was named in India's Test squad despite recovering from a toe injury sustained during India A's tour of Sri Lanka. Although the left-handed batter has been included in the squad, his participation remains subject to clearance from the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE). The team management is closely monitoring his recovery and does not want to rush him back before he is fully fit, especially with a long international season ahead.
Sudharsan has established himself as one of India's brightest batting prospects over the past year. BCCI Taking a Cautious Approach With Sudharsan's Recovery
According to a report by PTI, Sai Sudharsan is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru and did not travel with the Indian squad on Tuesday. Instead of joining the team immediately, he has remained at the CoE to continue his recovery under the supervision of the medical staff. The report states that the selectors and support staff are closely monitoring his progress before making any decision regarding his availability.
A source quoted by PTI revealed that Sudharsan has already resumed batting in the nets and is spending more than an hour each day training as part of his rehabilitation programme. Despite the encouraging signs, the BCCI medical team wants to observe his condition over the next three to four days before giving him the final fitness clearance. The board believes that returning too early could increase the risk of another injury.
The report further added that the BCCI has become more cautious following Harshit Rana's recent experience. Rana reportedly suffered another injury shortly after returning to top-level cricket, prompting the board to adopt a stricter approach toward rehabilitation and return-to-play protocols. The management is determined not to repeat a similar situation with Sudharsan or any other player recovering from injury.
India's injury list has become a growing concern ahead of the Sri Lanka tour. With Bumrah already ruled out and Washington Sundar unlikely to feature in the opening Test, the team management will be hoping that Sudharsan recovers quickly enough to strengthen the batting order. His absence would leave India with another selection headache at a crucial stage of the series.
