May 20, 2026: There are moments in sport that go beyond the scoreboard. What Sanjiv Goenka did after Lucknow Super Giants lost to Rajasthan Royals was one of them. The LSG owner took to X and posted a message that had nothing to do with defeat, nothing to do with damage control β€” and everything to do with a 15-year-old boy who is quickly becoming one of cricket's most talked-about names.

Goenka wrote that the world has already seen Sooryavanshi's talent and that the nation now sees the future in him. He acknowledged the weight of that responsibility on such young shoulders, called them very able ones, and urged the teenager to preserve his innocence while continuing to hone his brilliance. He signed off with prayers, aashirwad, and love. It was the kind of message you don't expect from someone whose team had just been beaten. And that is precisely why it went viral.

What Sooryavanshi Did to Deserve It

The context matters. This was not a friendly knock in a dead rubber. This was a must-win IPL 2026 clash at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, with Rajasthan Royals needing a win to keep their playoff hopes alive.  Lucknow Super Giants had posted 221 on the board. A daunting target by any standard, on any day. Sooryavanshi walked out and made it look like a training session.

He scored 93 off just 38 balls β€” 7 fours, 10 sixes β€” and guided RR to a seven-wicket win with five balls to spare. It was breathtaking, dominant, and completely fearless. The kind of innings that makes you stop and remind yourself the batter is only 15 years old. And yet, the man on the losing side found it in himself to stand up and applaud. That tells you something about both of them.

Where Rajasthan Royals Stand in the IPL 2026 Playoff Race

The win could not have come at a better time. Rajasthan Royals are now firmly in control of their own destiny. One win is all they need. Their final league match comes against the Mumbai Indians on May 24, and a victory there would take them to 16 points β€” a total no team currently in contention for the final playoff spot can overtake. RR would be through, simple as that. There is even a slim chance of finishing in the top two, though that route is far more complicated. It would require Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad to lose their final matches, and even then RR would likely need to win by a margin of around 70 runs to overhaul on net run rate. Possible, but not the focus right now.

What happens if RR lose to the Mumbai Indians?

This is where things get complicated. A defeat would leave Rajasthan on 14 points and suddenly very vulnerable. Punjab Kings could leapfrog them with a win over LSG. Kolkata Knight Riders could go past them too if they win both their remaining fixtures. RR could still scrape through without net run rate coming into play, but only if a very specific set of results fall their way β€” defeats for PBKS and CSK, plus KKR losing one of their last two. It is possible, but it is not a position RR want to be in.

If it does come down to net run rate at 14 points, Rajasthan actually hold a useful edge. Their NRR currently sits ahead of both Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals. Even if RR lose to Mumbai Indians by 10 runs, CSK would need to beat Gujarat Titans by at least 15 runs to overtake them. For DC, the gap is even larger β€” and realistically, too far to bridge. The road is clear. Beat the Mumbai Indians, and the Rajasthan Royals are in the playoffs. After what Sooryavanshi did against LSG, you would not bet against them.
