August 06, 2026: The ancestral residence of former Bangladesh captain and former Member of Parliament Shakib Al Hasan in Magura was vandalised and reportedly targeted with a petrol bomb on Wednesday evening. The incident took place just hours after Shakib appeared virtually at a press conference alongside former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
According to local reports, the attack occurred at around 8:45 pm at Shakib's family home in the Keshabmor area of Magura town. Miscreants allegedly damaged parts of the property and hurled a petrol bomb during the attack. Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported. However, the incident caused damage to the residence and raised fresh concerns over the security situation in the region.
Shakib, one of Bangladesh's greatest cricketers, previously represented the Magura-1 constituency as a Member of Parliament. Although he was not present at the residence during the incident, the attack has attracted widespread attention because of its timing and the political developments that preceded it.
Political Tensions Grow as Investigation Begins
Earlier in the day, Shakib joined a press conference virtually from Sri Lanka, where he appeared alongside former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The event was organised at the Foreign Correspondents' Club in New Delhi, where several political issues concerning Bangladesh were discussed.

Soon after the press conference, reports suggested that political tensions intensified, with several social media posts and public statements reacting strongly to the event. Some opposition groups reportedly criticised the media coverage of the press conference, although there has been no official confirmation linking those reactions directly to the attack on Shakib's residence.
Authorities have not yet announced the exact motive behind the incident or identified the individuals responsible for carrying out the attack. Police and other law enforcement agencies are expected to conduct a detailed investigation to determine how the attack was planned and whether it was politically motivated.
The incident has once again highlighted the tense political atmosphere in Bangladesh. Security agencies are expected to examine available evidence, including eyewitness accounts and any surveillance footage from the area, before reaching a conclusion. Officials are also expected to provide further updates as the investigation progresses.
