Shreyas Iyer Slams India's 'Atrocious' Display After Record T20I Defeat to England
July 08, 2026: India captain Shreyas Iyer did not hold back after his side suffered a crushing 125-run defeat against England in the third T20I at Trent Bridge. Calling the performance "atrocious" and "awful," Iyer admitted that the reigning T20 World Cup champions fell well below their standards.
The defeat gave England an unassailable 2-0 lead in the five-match series after the opening match was washed out. It also became India's biggest defeat by runs in T20 International history.
Chasing a challenging target of 202, India's batting lineup collapsed under relentless pace bowling and was bowled out for just 76 in 11.4 overs. The innings never gained momentum after the visitors lost five wickets inside the powerplay.
Speaking during the post-match presentation, a visibly disappointed Iyer accepted full responsibility for the team's poor display and stressed the need to learn from the heavy defeat.
"I think it was atrocious. I couldn't use a better word, honestly. Losing by such a big margin is definitely not acceptable. First things first, we need to accept this loss and go back to the drawing board to see what we did wrong. We played awful cricket for sure, but there are a lot of learnings from it as well," Iyer said.

England Dominate as India's Batting Crumbles
Iyer also pointed out that while Trent Bridge is generally known as a high-scoring venue, he did not believe the pitch was worth 200 runs. He felt India's poor execution in the field allowed Phil Salt, who scored 70 off 44 balls, and Sam Curran, who remained unbeaten on 41, to build a match-winning total.
Looking ahead to the fourth T20I in Bristol, Iyer urged every player to take greater responsibility and contribute to changing the team's fortunes.
"Players have to start thinking about how to make an impact and create momentum. Every individual has to think for himself and see how they can win matches and take that responsibility," he added.
England's fast bowlers Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue set the tone with a devastating new-ball spell. Bowling consistently above 145 km/h, the pair exposed India's top order with pace, bounce and accuracy.
Although Abhishek Sharma (10) and 15-year-old debutant Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (13) struck early boundaries, India's innings quickly fell apart. Tongue finished with career-best figures of 4/28, while Archer claimed 3/29 as India slumped to 52/5 by the end of the powerplay.
Only four Indian batters managed to reach double figures, narrowly avoiding India's lowest-ever T20I total of 74.
The defeat also means India are still searching for their first T20I victory under Shreyas Iyer's captaincy. With England leading the series 2-0, India must win the remaining matches to avoid a series defeat.
For England, the comprehensive victory showcased their dominance with both bat and ball. After posting a competitive total of 201, their pace attack produced a clinical performance to seal one of the most memorable wins in recent T20I history.
The record-breaking loss has also raised fresh questions about India's batting approach, team balance and execution as they prepare for the crucial fourth T20I.
