Rishabh Pant is vice-captain for the upcoming five match Test series in England; Mohammed Shami not included on medical grounds
May 24, 2025 – Shubman Gill has been appointed as the new Test captain for the upcoming five-match Test series against England. This announcement was made by chief selector and former Indian all-rounder Ajit Agarkar at a press conference in Mumbai today, May 24.
Rishabh Pant has been named vice-captain for Team India.
The squad was announced for the five-match Test series, starting June 20 in Headingly, Leeds. The other Tests will be held in Edgbaston, Lord's, Old Trafford and Oval.
Also present at the press briefing were Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Devajit Saiki and selector Subrata Banerjee.
According to Agarkar, Jasprit Bumrah’s name had been doing the rounds in the media as a likely choice for captaincy but he was not considered by the selectors as he may not play all five matches in England owing to workload management.
Mohammed Shami, said Agarkar, was not considered for selection in the squad following advice from the medical team, which deemed him unfit. "He's been trying to get fit for a series but I think he's had a setback over the last week or so. He's got some MRI done. I'd like to mention I don't think he was going to be able to play five Tests at the moment. I don't think his workload is where it needs to be, so it's just the medical guys who've told us that he's been ruled out of the series, unfortunately,” the selector explained.
