Hong Kong Open: PV Sindhu Knocked Out, Indian Men Shine with Strong Performances

Indian men’s singles players did well in the first round of the Hong Kong Open. HS Prannoy and Lakshya Sen reached the second round.

Sept 11, 2025: Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu was knocked out of the Hong Kong Open Super 500 after losing in the first round. She lost to Denmark’s Line Christophersen 21-15, 16-21, 19-21 in three games.

This was Sindhu’s first loss in six matches against European Championship silver medalist Christophersen. It was also her sixth first-round loss in the BWF World Tour this year.

Sindhu started well and won the first game 21-15. But Christophersen came back in the second game and won 21-16. The third game was very close and reached 19-19, but the Danish player stayed calm and won her first match against Sindhu.

Apart from Sindhu, Anupama Upadhyay also went out of the tournament. She lost to fourth seed Tomoka Miyazaki of Japan 17-21, 22-20, 14-21 in the women’s singles.

Indian Men’s Excellent Performance

Indian men’s singles players did well in the first round of the Hong Kong Open. HS Prannoy and Lakshya Sen reached the second round. Prannoy beat China’s Lu Guang Zu, while Sen won a tough match against his rival. Kiran George and Ayush Shetty also moved into the last-16.

Lakshya Sen defeated Chinese Taipei’s Olympian Wang Tzu-Wei 22-20, 16-21, 21-15 in a match that lasted one hour and 13 minutes. In the next round, he will face HS Prannoy. World number 34 Prannoy caused an upset by beating Lu Guang Zu 21-17, 21-14 in just 44 minutes.

Kiran George entered the second round by defeating Singapore’s Jason Teh 21-16, 21-11. Ayush Shetty came back from one game down to beat Chinese Taipei’s Su Li-Yang 15-21, 21-19, 21-13.

Early Exits in Doubles

In women’s doubles, the Panna sisters – Rutaparna and Shwetaparna – lost to Hong Kong’s Vanessa Pang and Sum Yau Wong 17-21, 9-21.

In mixed doubles, Dhruv Kapil and Tanisha Crasto also went out early. They lost to Chinese Taipei’s Chen Cheng Kuan and Hsu Yin-Hui 16-21, 11-21.
