Punjab Kings’ Win Overshadowed by Shock Fine on Captain Shreyas Iyer – What Went Wrong?

Udaipur, May 2, 2025: On the back of excellent performances by Yuzvendra Chahal (4 wickets) and captain Shreyas Iyer (72 runs), Punjab Kings defeated Chennai Super Kings by four wickets with two balls remaining in the 49th match of IPL 2025 on Wednesday. With this win, Punjab Kings moved up to the second position in the IPL 2025 points table. However, their joy was short-lived as captain Shreyas Iyer was fined ₹12 lakh.

Iyer Made a Mistake

Shreyas Iyer was found guilty of maintaining a slow over rate during the match against Chennai Super Kings. This was Punjab Kings' first slow over rate offense in IPL 2025. Because of this, one extra fielder had to stay inside the circle before the 19th over.

However, Chennai Super Kings could not take advantage of the penalty and were all out for 190 runs in 19.2 overs. Yuzvendra Chahal bowled brilliantly for Punjab Kings, taking four wickets for 32 runs in his 4 overs, including a hat-trick.

Punjab’s Victory

Prabhsimran Singh (54) and captain Shreyas Iyer (72) played key roles in the run chase. Punjab Kings chased the target of 191 runs in 19.4 overs, losing six wickets. They won the match by four wickets with two balls to spare.

Punjab Kings will play their next match against Lucknow Super Giants in Dharamsala. Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings will face Royal Challengers Bangalore in their upcoming match.
