IND vs SA: Should Gambhir Be Sacked? Sourav Opens Up After Eden Test Defeat

"At this stage, there is no question of sacking Gambhir"  -Gambhir

November 19, 2025: India lost only 4 Tests at home between 2013 and 2024. Gautam Gambhir’s Team India has matched that number in just the last year. Many questions are now being raised about his choice of pitches in the country. Even so, should Gambhir continue as the coach for red-ball cricket? Former captain and BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has spoken about this.

The Turner pitch backfired in the Eden Test. Still, Gambhir is not ready to blame the pitch. Current CAB president Sourav Ganguly has already shared his views. The news that the Eden pitch, which ended the match in just two and a half days, was prepared under the Indian team’s instructions is not new. Many believe India is now facing the consequences of Gambhir’s decisions. So, should the Gambhir era come to an end?

Sourav Urges Patience, Not Sacking Gambhir

Sourav doesn’t think Gambhir should be sacked at all. Instead, he wants India to start playing on good pitches. He told an all-India media outlet,

"At this stage, there is no question of sacking Gambhir. But everyone should ask themselves if they are working hard to win Test matches. It is more difficult on a hard pitch. The opponent will fight, and big runs will be scored in the first innings. In Test matches in India, the momentum of the game can suddenly change on the fourth or fifth day."

When asked what should be done in this situation, Sourav said,

"The pair of coach Gambhir and captain Shubman have performed exceptionally on the England batting pitches. I believe they will do well in India too. In my opinion, we should be more patient. India has the bowling strength to take 20 wickets. That was seen in the Test series against England at the Oval and Edgbaston. In India, if the ball is old, swing will work. The mentality has to change."
