Sports Ministry Clarifies: No Bilateral Ties with Pakistan, But India Free to Play Asia Cup 2025
Udaipur, Aug 22, 2025: There will be no bilateral matches between India and Pakistan under any circumstances, not even at a neutral venue. The Sports Ministry on Thursday clearly stated that its policy on sports relations with Pakistan is final and will be implemented immediately.
However, the Indian cricket team will still play in the Asia Cup T20 tournament in the UAE next month, as it is a multi-nation event. A Sports Ministry official explained that under the new policy, Indian players will not be allowed to travel to Pakistan, and Pakistani players will also not be allowed to play bilateral matches in India.
No Bilateral Matches with Pakistan
There will be no bilateral sports between India and Pakistan in the future. This rule will only apply to bilateral events. India will continue to play in multi-nation tournaments. Even if a bilateral series is planned in a neutral country like the USA, India will not take part.
When asked if this policy can change in the future, officials said the chances are very low. The new policy makes it clear that India will not relax its stand on sports ties with Pakistan. At the same time, India will continue to take part in international events to keep its image strong in the global sports community.
The Sports Ministry also said this policy is linked to India’s overall foreign policy. India is preparing to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the 2036 Olympics, so it must follow the Olympic Charter. This is why the government has given visas to Pakistani players for the Asia Cup hockey tournament in Bihar next month, even though Pakistan has refused to come citing security issues. The ministry added that Indian and Pakistani players can play in multi-nation tournaments, and if India hosts such events, Pakistan will also be allowed to take part.
India to Play in Asia Cup
Despite protests on social media, the Sports Ministry has confirmed that India will play in the Asia Cup, which will be held in the UAE in September. The ministry clarified that India will not stop its teams from joining multi-nation events, unless they are hosted by Pakistan. If Pakistan is the host, the government will decide whether to send the team or not.
Visa Process to be Made Easier
To make India a top destination for international sports events, the government also announced a simpler visa process. Players, officials, and technical staff from international sports bodies will get priority multi-entry visas, valid for up to five years. Heads of international sports organizations will also receive full protocol and honours when visiting India.
