April 03, 2026: Sunrisers Hyderabad started their IPL 2026 season in style at Eden Gardens, beating Kolkata Knight Riders by 65 runs. Everything worked for SRH — strong batting at the top, steady innings in the middle, and sharp bowling. The home crowd barely got a chance to cheer.

Kolkata Knight Riders became the first team to lose while chasing in IPL 2026. Sunrisers Hyderabad scored 226/8 after KKR chose to bowl, and KKR could only manage 161 in 16 overs. SRH won by 65 runs as their bowlers controlled the game.

Blessing Muzarabani took 4 wickets for 41 runs, but it was Heinrich Klaasen’s calm 52 off 35 balls that kept SRH’s innings strong. Chasing 226, KKR never found a rhythm and were bowled out for 161, losing their second match in a row after their opening loss to the Mumbai Indians.

Klaasen’s Calm Knock Guides SRH to Big Win Over KKR

Heinrich Klaasen’s experience-driven 52 off 35 balls guided Sunrisers Hyderabad back to winning ways as they thrashed Kolkata Knight Riders by 65 runs in their IPL 2026 clash on Thursday. While Blessing Muzarabani grabbed four wickets for 41 runs, it was Klaasen’s composed batting that held SRH’s innings together and ensured they posted a competitive 226/8 after KKR chose to bowl first.

SRH’s innings started in explosive fashion. The opening pair of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma wasted no time, putting KKR’s bowlers under immense pressure. Head smashed 46 off 21 balls with five fours and two sixes, while Sharma matched him with 48 off 21 balls, hitting three fours and a six in a single over off spinner Varun Chakaravarthy. The duo put on a rapid 82-run opening stand in just 34 deliveries, racing SRH to 84/1 in the powerplay. Even after rookie Kartik Tyagi removed Head, SRH continued to attack, with Klaasen and Nitish Kumar Reddy rebuilding the innings steadily.

KKR’s Chase Falls Apart

Chasing the daunting 227, KKR got a brief start from Finn Allen, who scored 28 off seven balls with four boundaries and two sixes. However, once Allen fell, the innings quickly unraveled. Run-outs and poor shot selection created chaos, leaving KKR’s middle order unable to form any meaningful partnerships. Angkrish Raghuvanshi fought valiantly with a 52 off 29 balls, hitting six fours and two sixes, but he lacked support from the other end. Veteran captain Ajinkya Rahane managed just eight runs off ten balls, while Cameron Green fell for two in a run-out caused by a miscommunication with Raghuvanshi. Rinku Singh added 35 off 25 but was dismissed at a crucial stage, ending any remaining hope for KKR.

The KKR innings also suffered due to ineffective bowling. Their main spinner, Varun Chakaravarthy, leaked 25 runs in a single over and finished with figures of 0/31 from two overs. Sunil Narine returned wicketless from four overs, conceding 39 runs, which allowed SRH’s batsmen to dominate early. The lack of partnership building and weak middle-order performance ultimately led to KKR being bowled out for 161 in just 16 overs.

SRH Bowling Dominates

SRH’s bowlers were disciplined and relentless throughout the KKR innings. Jaydev Unadkat took 3/21 in three overs, including the crucial wicket of Rahane. Ehsan Malinga added 2/14 in two overs, while Nitish Kumar Reddy chipped in with 2/17 in two overs. Blessing Muzarabani returned to clean up the tail, taking the wickets of Klaasen and Shivang Kumar in the final over to finish with a fine four-wicket haul. The SRH bowlers maintained pressure at every stage, ensuring KKR never regained momentum during their chase.

Klaasen and Reddy Steer SRH

After a brief collapse where SRH lost three wickets for just seven runs, Klaasen and Nitish Kumar Reddy steadied the innings with a mature partnership. Reddy scored 39 off 24 balls, while Klaasen rotated the strike effectively and struck boundaries when needed, keeping SRH on pace for a 11+ run rate. The pair added 82 runs together off 53 balls, building on the momentum created by Head and Sharma in the opening overs. Even as boundaries became less frequent, Klaasen’s calm approach ensured SRH did not lose control of the innings and posted a total that proved too high for KKR.

The match showcased SRH’s perfect balance of aggressive top-order batting, smart middle-order consolidation, and disciplined bowling. KKR, on the other hand, were exposed for their lack of partnerships, poor fielding, and inexperienced bowling at crucial stages. SRH’s win by 65 runs was comprehensive, and it highlighted the need for KKR to rethink their middle order and fielding strategies if they want to compete effectively in IPL 2026.
