Steve Smith Overtakes Rahul Dravid in List of Batters with Most Test Centuries

Udaipur, Jan 6, 2025: Steve Smith is now sixth on the list of batters with the most centuries in Test cricket. The legendary Australian right-hander scored his 37th Test century on Tuesday (January 6), going past former India captain and head coach Rahul Dravid, who finished his career with 36 hundreds.

Dravid played 164 Test matches between 1996 and 2012 and reached the three-figure mark 36 times. In comparison, the 36-year-old Smith, achieved his 37th Test century in just his 123rd Test match.

Smith brought up his century by running three runs off the second ball of the 110th over of Australia’s first innings, bowled by Jacob Bethell. The Australian captain became the third player to score a hundred in the ongoing fifth and final Test of the 2025–26 Ashes series, after England’s Joe Root and Australia’s Travis Head.

Steve Smith needed 166 balls to reach the 100-run mark on Tuesday. During his knock, he has hit 11 fours and one six so far.

The batsmen who are now ahead of Smith in the list of players with the most Test centuries include Sachin Tendulkar (51), Jacques Kallis (45), Joe Root (41), Ricky Ponting (41), and Kumar Sangakkara (39).

Smith’s Ashes Milestones

Smith’s first century of the ongoing Ashes series has also helped him move to second place on the list of batters with the most centuries in Ashes history. He was earlier tied with England great Jack Hobbs but now stands alone with 13 centuries from 41 Ashes Tests.

Only Don Bradman has scored more Ashes centuries than Smith.

Before scoring his 37th Test century, Smith also moved to second place in the list of batters with the most runs in Ashes history. He needed 84 runs in the match to go past Jack Hobbs’ tally of 3,636 runs and achieved it by taking a single off the second ball of the 100th over, bowled by Jacob Bethell.
