March 5, 2025 – In a sudden announcement today, Steve Smith, captain of the Australian cricket team, has said he is retiring from ODI cricket. He informed his teammates of this decision following the team’s defeat in the semi-final match yesterday against India at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. The Australian cricketing legend and star batter will, however, continue to play Test and T20 cricket.

"It has been a great ride and I have loved every minute of it. There have been so many amazing times and wonderful memories. Winning two World Cups was a great highlight along with the many fantastic team-mates who shared the journey,” Smith was quoted as saying.

The 35-year-old cricketer has played 170 matches since 2010 and became one of Australia's top run-scorers getting 5,800 runs at an average of 43.28, including 12 centuries and 35 half-centuries. His ODI debut match had been against West Indies at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. He has also taken 28 wickets at an average of 34.67.
