Suryakumar Yadav Backs Abhishek Sharma Amid Form Concerns Ahead of IND vs SA Clash
Suryakumar Yadav has backed Abhishek Sharma despite his poor run in the T20 World Cup. The India captain said the youngster is a match-winner and his return to form is only a matter of time ahead of the IND vs SA clash.
February 21, 2026: Flamboyant India opener Abhishek Sharma has had a tough time in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup so far. He was playing with fever in India’s first match against the USA and got out for a golden duck. In the second match against Namibia in Delhi, he missed the game due to a stomach infection. He returned against Pakistan but was dismissed for a duck again. In the fourth match against the Netherlands, he once again failed to score.
After three ducks in a row, many people have started talking about his poor form. However, India captain Suryakumar Yadav is not worried. He said that Abhishek is a talented player who can win matches on his own. He reminded everyone that the youngster played very well in the Asia Cup.
Suryakumar said people should not worry too much. He added that cricket is a team game. If one player fails, others can support him. He said Abhishek is trying to play his natural game. If he scores, everyone knows what he can do. He also said that last year, Abhishek helped the team in tough times, and now the team will support him.
South Africa’s Plan Against Abhishek
Before the match, the South Africa national cricket team focused on spin bowling in practice. Abhishek has struggled against spinners in this tournament. Earlier, he was dismissed by Salman Agha and Aryan Dutt.
South Africa may use the same plan. Captain Aiden Markram and spinner Keshav Maharaj spent extra time practising in the nets before the fast bowlers joined the session.
Team Management Backs Tilak’s Role in the Middle Order
India captain Suryakumar Yadav said that the team management has clearly told Tilak Varma how they want him to bat. Tilak has been asked to control the innings if early wickets fall. If India loses one wicket, he can play his natural attacking game in the powerplay. But if two wickets fall quickly, he must slow down, build a partnership, and guide the team until the 10th over.
Suryakumar explained that the team has enough strong hitters later in the order. So Tilak’s job is to stay calm and help the team recover in tough situations. He said this plan has been discussed clearly with the player.
The captain also admitted that Tilak may not be fully happy with his recent performances. However, he said there is no reason to worry. Tilak has worked hard in the last few practice sessions. The team believes in his ability and talent.
Suryakumar reminded everyone that Tilak has performed well for India at No. 3 in the past. He was even named Player of the Match in the Asia Cup final against Pakistan. The captain said he is confident that Tilak will soon return to form and play an important role for the team.
