Tamim Iqbal Makes Major Move for Cricketers After Taking Charge of BCB
Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal, as the new BCB chief, announces major salary hikes for male and female domestic cricketers.
April 09, 2026: Former Bangladesh cricket captain Tamim Iqbal has taken charge of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). One of his first actions as the chairman of the 11-member ad hoc committee was to address the long-standing financial inequality in domestic cricket. Tamim decided to increase the salaries of both male and female cricketers to ensure fair pay.
Soon after taking charge, Tamim learned that female cricketers used to earn only ₹750 for playing an ODI match. He was shocked and expressed his surprise at such low pay. Following this, he announced a new salary structure for female players. Under the new system, female cricketers will now receive ₹11,250 for an ODI match, ₹15,000 for a long-form match, and ₹7,500 for a T20 match. In addition, the monthly allowance for the country’s top 36 female cricketers has been increased from ₹22,500 to ₹30,000. Tamim said that, considering the overall situation, this is a positive step, but there are limits to how much salaries can be increased at once.

Increased Pay for Male Cricketers
The salaries of male cricketers have also been increased. Category A players will now receive ₹48,750, Category B will get ₹37,500, and Category C will earn ₹30,000. In addition, the first-class match fee has been raised from ₹52,500 to ₹75,000. Tamim, 37, who has played 391 international matches for Bangladesh, admitted that domestic cricketers were not receiving enough remuneration before this change.
He said, “Salaries have not increased much in the last three to four years. I think cricketers used to get much less in the previous structure. Cricket survives on the hard work of the players, and they deserve fair remuneration.” He also spoke about the challenges facing Bangladesh cricket and said that the damage to its image over the last one and a half years must be fixed together. He added, “Whether we do good or bad, there will be criticism, but no one wants cricket to remain in this state. We always want cricket to be a place of pride. Those associated with BCB should be able to proudly say that this is our place. Bringing back that pride is the big challenge now.”
The Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) has welcomed Tamim’s initiative. In a statement, they said that this step to increase wages in domestic cricket will play a major role in advancing Bangladesh cricket, and they believe that the benefits of these changes will be seen very soon.
