Ter Stegen Regains Barcelona Captaincy After Resolving Dispute

Udaipur, Aug 9, 2025: Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen has regained the captaincy of Barcelona. He had been out of action for a long time due to injury. During his absence, Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, who came out of retirement, took Ter Stegen’s place last season. Meanwhile, Ter Stegen, who is waiting to return from injury, faced problems with the club.

Barcelona wanted to register a new goalkeeper, Juan Garcia, under La Liga’s injury-transfer rules. But Ter Stegen refused to share any information about his medical condition with La Liga. Because of this, Barcelona’s plan to bring Juan Garcia from Espanyol last June did not see the light of the day.

Ter Stegen is Barcelona Captain

Ter Stegen lost the captaincy of Barcelona due to this controversy. He was replaced by Ronald Araujo. Barcelona even took legal action in this matter. However, within a day, Ter Stegen returned as captain after the problem was solved. Yesterday, Barcelona officials announced that goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen has been made the club captain again after he agreed to send his medical report to La Liga. The La Liga champions said in a press release, "The club announces that player Marc-Andre Ter Stegen has signed the necessary authorization to send his surgical medical report to La Liga. The disciplinary case is now closed, and he has been reinstated as the first team captain with immediate effect."

Ter Stegen also shared a statement before the announcement, saying, "I am ready to fully cooperate with the club to resolve the matter. We are also prepared to give the necessary approvals."

Injury and La Liga Rules

According to La Liga rules, if a player is out for at least four months, the club can use up to 50 percent of his salary to register new players. Barcelona believes Ter Stegen will be out for at least four months. However, Ter Stegen said he hopes to return to the field within three months.
