May 26, 2025 - The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the Test squad for the England tour on Saturday, May 24. Shubman Gill has been made the captain, while Rishabh Pant was named vice-captain. Some new players have also got a chance in the team. At the same time, a few players have been left out of the squad.

India’s tour of England will begin on June 20. For this, the selection committee has picked an 18-member team. Shreyas Iyer, Mohammed Shami and Sarfaraz Khan have not been included. Let us take a look at how these players have performed in Test matches against England.

Shreyas Iyer

Iyer had a mixed performance in domestic cricket last season. He led India-D in the Duleep Trophy and also played some good innings for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy. Playing in the middle order, Iyer scored 480 runs in 5 matches at an average of 68.57.

Talking about his performance against England, Iyer has played 3 Test matches so far and scored only 138 runs in 6 innings. He has played just one Test match in England, where he managed only 34 runs in both innings combined.

Sarfaraz Khan

After a strong performance in domestic cricket, Khan made his Test debut against England in 2024. In that home series, he scored 200 runs in 5 innings of 3 matches. His best score was an unbeaten 68, and he hit three half-centuries.

Even though he performed well, Sarfaraz was not included in the senior team for the England tour. However, he has been selected for the India A team.

Mohammed Shami

Experienced fast bowler Shami also missed out on selection for the England tour. He has played 15 Test matches against England between 2012 and 2022, taking 44 wickets in 27 innings.

On English soil, Shami has featured in 14 Tests from 2014 to 2023 and took 42 wickets in 25 innings, with an economy rate of 3.50. Despite this good record, Shami was not picked. The main reason for his exclusion is his heel injury, which was also visible during this IPL season.
