May 23, 2025 - Poor Harry Kane! After 14 years at Tottenham, where he became one of the world’s best strikers, Kane never won a title. He left the north London club feeling empty and joined Bayern Munich. This season, he finally lifted the Bundesliga trophy.

Many fans joked that the Bundesliga trophy looks like a shield. So while Kane celebrated his first major title, he might have felt a twinge of sadness watching his former club. Tottenham still have no major trophies to their name, no matter how many Europa League finals they reach.

Ends of 17-Year Title Drought

Tottenham won the Europa League final against Manchester United 1-0 at San Mamés in Bilbao on Sunday night. This was Tottenham’s first trophy since the League Cup in 2008. It was also their first European trophy in 41 years — the last time was when they won the UEFA Cup in 1984, which is the predecessor of the Europa League.

Johnson’s Goal Decider 

Forward Brennan Johnson scored the only goal in the 42nd minute to give Tottenham the win. Tottenham’s South Korean captain, Son Heung-min, celebrated with the trophy after the final whistle. This was Son’s first trophy with Spurs after 10 years at the club.

Twist of Fate for Son and Postecoglou

Son’s South Korea lost to Oceania in the 2015 Asian Cup final when Ange Postecoglou was the coach of Australia. After the match, Postecoglou comforted a tearful Son. Now, Son has won his first club title under this same Australian coach at Tottenham. So far, Son’s only other title is the 2018 Asian Games with South Korea’s U-23 team.

Son a Tottenham Legend

At the start of the season, Son said he wanted to be a Tottenham legend but did not believe it could happen. After winning the title, Son said, “Okay, I’m a legend. Why not? Just for today! No one has done this for 17 years. Thanks to some great players, today I can say I am a legend of this club.”

Job Rumours Despite Success

Tottenham is 17th in the Premier League with one match left. British media rumours say Postecoglou might lose his job. But after winning the Europa League and qualifying Tottenham for the Champions League, these rumours should quiet down for now. Postecoglou said, “Whatever happens, we will see.”

Postecoglou’s Record and Challenges

Postecoglou won the trophy in his second season and 100th match as Tottenham coach. He said about his career, “I always win titles in my second year. Nothing has changed... I am a winner. Winning is what I do most.” However, Tottenham lost 21 of their 37 Premier League matches this season.

Worst Season in Decades

Manchester United is in a worse position, 16th in the league with one game left. This is their worst season since 1973-74. The club will miss European competition next season for only the second time since 1990. United’s coach Ruben Amorim said, “If the board and fans think I’m not right, I will leave the next day without asking for compensation.”
