Sixteen-year-old Yug Chelani from Udaipur, Rajasthan, achieved a remarkable feat by clinching the gold medal in the 400 meters freestyle event during the ongoing National Junior Sub-Junior Swimming Championship in Bhubaneshwar. Yug's victory came on the opening day of the competition, where he demonstrated his exceptional skills and determination. Vinod Sanadhya, the secretary of the Rajasthan Swimming Association, highlighted that Yug secured the top position with a timing of 4:04.45. Notably, Yug's journey to victory was marked by a notable turnaround, as he initially ranked sixth in the heats during the morning session. However, he showcased his unwavering enthusiasm and talent in the finals held in the evening, ultimately securing the coveted gold medal.
According to Mahesh Paliwal, the swimming instructor at Maharana Pratap Khel Gaon in Udaipur, there remain four more events in which Yug Chelani could potentially secure additional medals. Lalit Singh Jhala, the Sports Officer in charge of Maharana Pratap Khel Gaon, along with Sunita Bhandari, the District Sports Officer of Udaipur, Mukesh Paliwal, Secretary of Rajsamand Swimming Association, and Govind Sanadhya, the Treasurer, have all extended their congratulations to Yug for his impressive achievement. This acknowledgment reflects the collective recognition and appreciation of Yug's outstanding performance in the swimming championship, as well as the anticipation for his continued success in the upcoming events.
Paliwal mentioned that Yug embarked on his swimming journey at the age of six. He dedicated 3 to 4 hours to daily practice, honing his skills and technique. Under the guidance of instructor Mahesh Paliwal, Yug underwent extensive training at the Swimming Pool Academy situated within Maharana Pratap Sports Village in Udaipur. This nurturing environment played a pivotal role in shaping Yug's abilities and fostering his growth as a swimmer.
In the year 2019, Yug secured a notable achievement by earning one bronze and three gold medals in the school's National Championship. Subsequently, in 2022, he continued his success trajectory, winning a silver and a bronze medal in the Khelo India competition. Yug's accomplishments extended further in the Junior National Championship, where he showcased his versatility by clinching medals across various events: a bronze, a silver, a gold, and another silver medal.
