June 6, 2025 - Incredible! Last night’s match between France and Spain in the Nations League semi-finals can be summed up in one word. Spain was leading 4-0 by the 58th minute of the match in Stuttgart. It looked like Spain would easily reach the final by crushing France.
But no one knew that a big drama was still left. In the end, Spain won the match 5-4. But it was France who nearly created a fairy tale comeback, falling just short.
Spain Dominates First Half
Spain was leading 2-0 in the first half of the match. The goals were scored by Nico Williams and Mikel Merino. After the break, Yamal scored Spain’s third goal from the penalty spot in the 54th minute. Just a minute later, Pedri added the fourth goal.
France Fights Back
When France was trailing 4-0, many fans might have stopped watching, thinking the result was already decided. But things started to change. Kylian Mbappe scored a penalty in the 59th minute, making it 4-1. Then Yamal scored again in the 67th minute, his second goal of the night, making it 5-1 for Spain. Even then, France did not give up.
France’s Late Comeback Falls Short
Ryan Cherki scored for France in the 79th minute. Then Dani Vivian scored in the 84th minute, reducing the gap to 5-3. In added time, Randal Kolo Muani scored again, making it 5-4.
Although France tried hard till the last minute, they could not score the fifth goal. Still, they deserve credit for turning a one-sided match into a thrilling contest.
Yamal’s Perfect Record Against Mbappe
With this win, Yamal again tasted victory against Mbappe’s team. Yamal has now faced Mbappe six times - and won all six matches.
Spain to Face Portugal in Final
Now, in the Nations League final on June 8, Spain will face Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal.
When asked about playing against Ronaldo, Yamal said after the match, “Are you talking about playing against Ronaldo? He is a legend. I will do my job, which is to win the match.”
