Is MS Dhoni Really Retiring? Latest Update on His Future in Cricket
Udaipur, May 8, 2025: Mahendra Singh Dhoni is not retiring from the IPL at the end of this season. The 44-year-old Dhoni confirmed this after Chennai's victory over Kolkata Knight Riders yesterday.
The captain, who has won five titles with Chennai, wants to take more time to decide on his retirement. However, a few days ago, when Danny Morrison asked him during the toss whether he would play next season, Dhoni said, "I don't know whether I will come in the next match or not." At that time, it was thought that Dhoni might retire this season. For now, it doesn't seem like that.
Dhoni has been playing the IPL for the last 2-3 seasons despite not being fully fit. He plays while managing his physical condition, preparing himself for a few balls. The team's head coach, Steven Fleming, also mentioned that Dhoni's knee problem prevents him from batting for long periods. This is why he batted at number 9 in the IPL. Many of Dhoni's fans do not like seeing him bat so low.
Dhoni’s Physical Struggles
"I play only two months a year. After this IPL season ends, I will have to work hard for six to eight months. We need to see whether my body can handle that kind of pressure," said Dhoni.
Many people are suggesting Dhoni should retire if necessary, such as former South African pacer Shaun Pollock. In a discussion on Cricbuzz, Pollock said, "He has nothing left to achieve. He has the freedom to decide depending on his legacy and influence in the franchise. Will that change? Will the owners talk to him? We don't know. But I will be very surprised to see him here next year."
Dhoni’s Current Status
However, Dhoni himself has not made a decision yet. He explained, “I can't make any decisions right now. But wherever I go, I feel the love and affection of the people.”
Dhoni’s Performance in IPL
In the current IPL, Dhoni has scored 180 runs in 12 innings. Most of his runs have come when the team’s defeat seemed almost certain. This shows that he no longer has the ability to play long innings at his best.
