 Udaipur, Dec 24, 2025: Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli returned to domestic cricket in their signature style - smashing centuries in their respective opening matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. BCCI had instructed that domestic cricket should be played members of the Indian national side. To retain a place in the ODI team, players needed to demonstrate both form and fitness by participating in the domestic circuit. Following the Board’s instructions, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli proved their mettle in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Both superstars scored centuries on the day. Rohit crossed 150 runs, while Kohli became the second Indian, after Sachin Tendulkar, to score 16,000 runs in List A cricket.

Effortless Century by Rohit

Rohit Sharma returned to domestic cricket after seven years. After managing the pressures of international cricket, these two legends are rarely seen in domestic matches. However, the board emphasized that they needed to showcase their form. Rohit faced a team like Sikkim and made the task look effortless, scoring 155 runs off just 94 balls. He reached his century in 62 balls, hitting 9 sixes and 18 boundaries. Mumbai easily secured victory by 8 wickets. Notably, 12,000 spectators attended the match in Jaipur just to watch Rohit in action, and they were not disappointed.

Kohli’s Century Against Andhra Pradesh

Virat Kohli faced Andhra Pradesh, a relatively lesser-known team, and the star batter once again demonstrated his class. Kohli scored a flawless century, crossing the 16,000-run mark in List A cricket on his very first shot of the innings. He became the second Indian, after Sachin Tendulkar, to achieve this milestone. Sachin reached 16,000 runs in 385 innings, while Kohli accomplished it in just 330 innings, finishing this innings with a brilliant century.

Perspective: Domestic Cricket as Preparation for ODIs

Given the current standard of Indian domestic cricket, there is room to question the competitiveness of matches involving superstars like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma against lower-ranked teams.
