Despite selection for the upcoming ODI series against Australia, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s future in ODIs remains uncertain. BCCI may require them to play domestic cricket for match fitness ahead of the 2027 World Cup.

Udaipur, Oct 06, 2025: Even though Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have been selected for the upcoming ODI series against Australia, their future in this format is still uncertain. Both players have already retired from Test and T20I cricket, so they now play only ODIs — a format that is not played very often these days.

It is believed that Rohit and Kohli want to continue playing for India until the 2027 World Cup. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not given them any assurance. The board has also taken a strict stand regarding both players.

Play Domestic Cricket

Rohit Sharma has also been removed from the ODI captaincy, raising questions about his and Virat Kohli’s future in the team. Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has advised both senior players to return to domestic cricket to stay match-fit.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli want to play in the 2027 World Cup, but match fitness will be their biggest challenge” - Irfan said on his YouTube channel

Virat Kohli is known as one of the fittest players in the world, while Rohit has also worked hard on his fitness before the ODI series against Australia. However, Irfan believes that both players must prove their match fitness if they want to play in the 2027 World Cup.

What Did Ajit Agarkar Say?

Earlier, BCCI Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar had made it clear that players who are not part of the national team must play domestic cricket whenever they are available. This is why senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were seen playing in domestic matches last season.
