January 12, 2026: India all-rounder Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the rest of the ODI series against New Zealand. The 26-year-old suffered a side strain while bowling in the first ODI at the BCA Stadium in Vadodara and was taken off the field immediately.

He did not return during the first innings. However, he came out to bat at number eight when India were chasing a target of 301 runs. Sundar remained unbeaten on seven runs as India won the match by four wickets.

After the match, captain Shubman Gill confirmed that Sundar went for scans. The results showed a side strain, and he was ruled out of the remaining matches in the series.

More injury worries for India

Meanwhile, the BCCI is yet to confirm the update officially. The board is expected to share details about Washington Sundar’s fitness on Monday morning. This is the second time in two days that an Indian cricketer has been ruled out of the New Zealand series. On Sunday evening, Rishabh Pant suffered an abdominal injury. The injury was later confirmed as a strain, which ruled him out of the series.

Virat Kohli named Player of the Match in first ODI

Star India batter Virat Kohli once again delivered with the bat as India took a 1-0 lead in the series. After Rohit Sharma was dismissed for 26 runs, Kohli came in and played attacking shots early before settling into an anchor role. The 37-year-old scored 93 runs, falling just seven runs short of his 85th international century. India won the match in the second last over.

Shubman Gill also played a key role with a knock of 56 runs, while Shreyas Iyer scored 49 on his return to the side. With Washington Sundar unavailable, Harshit Rana was promoted up the batting order. He shared a useful partnership with KL Rahul, with both players scoring 29 runs each to help India seal the win.
