Who Is Saransh Jain? Meet the Surprise Pick in India's Test Squad for Sri Lanka
Saransh Jain's maiden India call-up is more than a cricketing milestone. From fulfilling his father's dream to earning a place through outstanding domestic performances, here's the inspiring story behind the all-rounder's selection for the Sri Lanka Test series.
July 29, 2026: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced India's squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, and one of the biggest talking points is the inclusion of all-rounder Saransh Jain. While the return of Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja grabbed the headlines, Saransh's maiden call-up has emerged as one of the most inspiring stories from the squad announcement.
Bumrah has been named in the 15-member squad but will need to clear the BCCI's fitness test before he is available for selection. Ravindra Jadeja also returns after recovering from injury, strengthening India's spin attack ahead of the Sri Lanka tour. However, it is Saransh Jain's journey to the national team that has touched the hearts of cricket fans.
The 33-year-old all-rounder has been one of the most consistent performers in domestic cricket over the past few seasons. His selection is not just a reward for his performances but also the fulfilment of a dream shared by his family, especially his father, former Madhya Pradesh cricketer Subodh Jain.
Saransh Jain's Emotional Journey to the Indian Team
Saransh has been playing first-class cricket since the 2013-14 season. During one of Madhya Pradesh's training tours to Australia, his father underwent surgery after being diagnosed with cancer. His family decided not to tell Saransh about his father's illness so that he could remain fully focused on cricket. He only learned about the situation after returning from the tour.
Despite battling a serious illness, Subodh Jain continued to encourage his son. "I am fine now. If you play well, then I will become even better," he told Saransh after the surgery. Those words became a source of motivation for the all-rounder, who continued working hard to achieve his dream of representing India.

Subodh himself represented Madhya Pradesh in Ranji Trophy cricket but never got the opportunity to play for India. Now, that dream is set to come true through his son. Saransh has built an impressive domestic record, scoring 2,223 runs at an average of 31.75 and taking 188 wickets in 54 first-class matches.
His performances during the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season further strengthened his case for national selection. In just seven matches, he scored 518 runs, including one century and three half-centuries, while continuing to contribute with the ball. Saransh also impressed during India A's tour of Sri Lanka in June-July, where he picked up six wickets in a match and scored a valuable 70 runs, proving his ability to perform in conditions similar to those expected in the upcoming Test series.
India will begin the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka with the first Test in Galle from August 15 to 19, followed by the second Test in Colombo from August 23 to 27. Led by captain Shubman Gill, India will be aiming for a series victory to strengthen their position in the ongoing ICC World Test Championship race. For Saransh Jain, however, the tour represents much more than just another series—it is the fulfilment of a lifelong dream and a proud moment for his family after years of sacrifice and perseverance.
