Shreyas Iyer Tipped as India’s Next ODI Captain, BCCI Awaits Rohit Sharma’s Call

Udaipur, Aug 21, 2025: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer, who was not selected in the Asia Cup T20 squad, as the next captain of the Indian ODI team.

At the same time, after Suryakumar Yadav, Shubman Gill is leading the race to become the T20 captain. Gill was made the Test captain before the England tour earlier this year, and he has also been appointed as the vice-captain of the T20 team for the Asia Cup under Surya’s leadership. Surya is now 34 years old, and in the future, once he steps down from captaincy, Gill is likely to take charge of the T20 format.

Shreyas Iyer in Line for ODI Captaincy

Shreyas Iyer was close to being selected in the Indian T20 team but missed out because only 15 players were taken to Dubai. BCCI sources revealed that a few days ago, there were official and unofficial talks about the future of India’s captaincy across all three formats.

The decision to make Shubman Gill captain before the England tour was taken after observing his leadership ability for a long time. Gill will turn 26 on September 8. He is expected to lead the Test team for a long time. Surya Kumar Yadav is already 34, and in the future, a new T20 captain will also be needed. That is why Gill has been made the vice-captain in T20.

Shreyas, who is 30 years old, played an important role in India’s Champions Trophy win this year, scoring 15, 56, 79, 45 and 48 in five matches. He has scored 2,845 runs in 70 ODIs with five centuries at an average of 48.22.

Rohit’s Future Will Decide Shreyas’ Captaincy

Rohit Sharma is currently India’s ODI captain. He is 38 years old. During the Champions Trophy, Rohit was the captain and Gill was the vice-captain. A BCCI source said that at this time there is so much cricket that no player can captain in all three formats. That is why Gill has been given the Test captaincy and also made T20 vice-captain.

The source added that Shreyas is being seen as the captain till the 2027 ODI World Cup. Rohit and Virat have already retired from T20 and Test cricket. If Rohit steps down from ODIs after the Australia series in October, Shreyas is likely to take over.
